Why Is This Happening?
-
Hey can someone tell me why this person keeps posting these?
-
Maybe this user is just trying to be helpful because there are so many lazy uploads without proper titles and descriptions to identify the content.
-
Brad is very helpful for those that don't put extra info in the description. I believe now all they add is the release date of the video.
-
Ok, got it. Yeah I try to find the description for all the vids that I post.
-
There are many posters who made generic torrent ...
[especially large amount of torrent size] ...
[For long story short no specific or proper description] ...
Reason: Laziness ...
Purpose: Boost-Up ratio ... -
@john32123666 To me this looks like the site's got to a certain level of popularity that makes it really hard to moderate. Meaning lots of members who are completely unaware of the ratio system, others who notice it and start to mass upload junk files, re-encodings, "enhanced" versions, random software, etc...
I feel like the site needs some quality of life changes if it really wants to keep things under control. Personally, there are a few things I'd consider:
1 - New members who joined via invitation codes should have their account linked to the inviters, every time they reach gracetime or suffer any penality, some penality is applied to them as well. This will make people think twice before inviting random people and instead make them invite people they trust.
2 - New members who have uploaded torrents and received low ratings should get a warning about the content quality, followed by having their upload permission revoked in case of second offense.
3- New members should be unable to delete their own torrents before 24 hours after it's listed, instead such content should be flagged to be reviewed by the moderation. This is to prevent torrents being deleted just to be uploaded again in a very disheveled way of "bumping".

@ianfontinell It seems to me the site is understaffed. This seems to have been the case for a while now... not really sure why.
-
@ianfontinell That's some good structure right there.
-
I understand the perception that the site is "understaffed," but as background, I believe the Moderators and Helpdesk staff are unpaid volunteers.
I once considered taking on such a role, but felt that my overall (stunning lack of) computer skills would require too much remedial education before I became an asset, rather than a liability.
Along those lines, some members volunteer -- but quit in short order -- during the training. Others may not possess the "team" attitude or service orientation to deal with a never-ending stream of newbie questions (answered easily in the Rules section, but who reads these days?).
When all's said and done, I applaud any computer-savvy members who have the time and interest to volunteer. It would really help our site!
And to return to the thread's origin, I really appreciate Brad's citations -- I award him the rarely used bikini..!

@ianfontinell I agree with most of what you have said.
There is a whole cycle at play here which is contributing to the overall decline in the site.
- An overwhelming amount of content of dubious value to the site is being uploaded on a daily basis so new torrents are getting pushed off the first pages in a matter of hours, and as a result they are attracting fewer and fewer downloaders. Users who download them are not getting enough leechers and their ratio is suffering. This is a particular issue for badly titled torrents which don’t show up in searches.
- It's next to impossible to fix your ratio just by seeding downloaded torrents under these circumstances. So to fix their ratio users are uploading more and more junk torrents, which is just adding to the problem of too much content being uploaded.
- These junk torrents seed ok for a few hours while they are on the first pages, then they quickly get pushed to page 5 and start to die. The users who downloaded them are seeding but they don't get leechers, and so more users are pulled into the bad ratio spiral.
- These users will either abandon the site altogether, or consider adding to the already overwhelming mountain of junk being uploaded.
- Users who upload to fix their ratio quickly realise that their uploads are only seeding healthily for a very short time (because they are generally junk) so uploading a 500mb video won’t help their ratio very much. Instead they create a 40gb collection of random stuff from their hard drive and share that. It might attract just 7 leechers, but it will get them 40gb of upload credit, but in the process will trash the ratios of the 7 other users… and the spiral continues.
Without drastic action this cycle is only going to get worse, and I don't know if the will and the ability to take action exists here.
I used to be a moderator on a private tracker, which was a thankless job and resulted in me getting death threats (gotta love the sewer that is internet discourse). It required strict 24/7 moderation, even an hour without proper moderation caused problems. I am well aware of all the internal politics and power struggles which stifle change and exasperate problems. While, I don’t know what is going on behind the scenes here, from the outside I can see all the problems of an unmoderated private tracker that are all too familiar to me.
