Please…help needed in identifying the song snippet from the 1961 Columbia motion picture classic, A Raisin in the Sun–based on Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 Broadway play of the same name--the title from Langston Hughes’ 1951 poem, “Harlem” (“Dream Deferred”).
It’s a great movie, and I’ve seen it a few times. The first time was in a junior high class back in the mid 70’s. The last time was just a few years ago; and that was the first time I noticed the tune in a segment running almost exactly 30 seconds--from around 56:50 to 57:20 in the movie--recognizing the “call” as the opening of a song on a record I had that my mom brought home one day.
Unique in a couple of ways--the 7” was a 78 RPM record, and not the usual 45 and more interesting was the song itself--an African song. I have no idea where my mom got the record, let alone how the song came to be of interest to her in the first place. Asking her about it today, she probably wouldn’t recall much with so many years gone by. I was probably 5 or 6--the mid 60’s--the last time I heard the song.
Anyway, typical with me and getting older, is that desire to “hold on” to some of those moments and things from my past--this song definitely being an example--and any help in reliving this would be most appreciated!
