Reporting Duplicates
-
When reporting a duplicate it important to understand which torrent is actually the original and the duplicate. If you look at the example and the Added date it first appears that they are reported correctly, but however they are not. One misunderstanding I believe is in the date, the system uses Year-Month-Day Time Format. The other is not realizing when torrents are promoted (recycled) the date in the “added date” gets moved into the description as "Original upload: xx-xx-xx ". Then the new date added get set to when it was promoted.
So now they have been reported incorrectly, the one reported as the duplicate is actually the Original.
Incorrect reports just get “deleted”, no way to fix the incorrect report.DUPLICATE files are not allowed and will be removed. You are expected to run a search for duplicates prior to submitting a torrent. Duplicates may be accepted when part of a themed collection. A file is considered a duplicate if an existing torrent has the same format and similar size (<10% difference) and has at least one seeder.

Am I being stupid but the date of the original upload in your 'reported duplicate' is before the date of the upload for your 'original torrent'.
To my mind that would make the earlier one the original. Have I missed something?
-
Yes, they reported it backward. This happens often so I am trying to let users know to look for it.
-The left torrent was added on 2011-09-18
-The Right torrent was added on 2013-12-01
-Then the left torrent was promoted (recycled) on 2014-07-02, at that time the 2011-09-18 date get copied into the description with Original upload.
The left torrent is the original and the right is the dupe. But the are still reported backwards and all we can do is delete the report. Hopefully, a user will report the duplicate correctly. -

I do get a few reports that they did not seed the orignal uploaded date and think it is the dupe when it is not.

Also, do not forget that there are two other things to take into account when determining whether or not a torrent is a duplicate….. They are:
-
Format Container - e.g. are both files in .avi or is one .avi and one .mp4... If the format container is different, then they are not considered a duplicate
-
File Size - If the first rule isn't applicable because the format container is the same (i.e. both files are .avi), then you need to look at the size difference. If the file size is the same, then it is a duplicate. If the file size is different, the newer upload must be a minimum of 10% different than the original torrent in order to not be classified as a duplicate.

I've been wondering what that little recycle icon meant. Thanks for explaining it.

Ask me who posted a duplicate yesterday, go on, ask me! Yup, you're right but at least someone got 50 points

I was shocked…..

Don't forget to check the file sizes!
Before reporting a duplicate (and more importantly…to the site, before confirming and removing a "duplicate")...
Please make sure the difference in the file sizes between the original and "duplicate" is not greater than 10%; and therefore considered not to be a duplicate.
I've had the same upload removed twice now, in spite of its 15-16% difference in file size of that of the original.
What makes this instance worse, is that at the time of removal, it was in the top 5-10 of the "most popular torrents!"

Usually confirmed duplicate uploads aren't removed immediately and you get a PM. You can reply to the moderator having handled that report and appeal giving a reason why you belief it isn't handled right. If you aren't satisfied with his feedback, you still can write the Helpdesk.
I've looked through your Uploaded Torrents for those having found duplicate:
a) The first wasn't indeed a duplicate, so I restored it, made it freeleech, promoted it and marked to your Profile that it wasn't a duplicate.
b) The second I confirm to be a duplicate. A few added screenshots don't make it no duplicate. On a video torrent, what counts are the video files. Only when we see a full original Picture Set added, it will count as added shared works.
So that gives a somewhat mixed result…

I'm not quite sure what file you're referring to with your comment..

…and many thanks for re-posting the one removed and making it freeleech as well!

I've had the same upload removed twice now, in spite of its 15-16% difference in file size of that of the original.
But do we we really need a multitude of different file sizes and formats of the same movie, over and over again.
To my mind there are two possibilities, a full DVD post, a decent non-DVD post. I realise that some people like the tweaks of other posts but type 'scandal vatican' for instance into the search box. Do we really need 44 different posts?
And with so many duplicates it is obvious the seeder hasn't even bothered to check and certainly hasn't bothered to say 'this is a copy of something I got elsewhere so thank you to the original poster'.
-
I know it's your job, hence your "title," but why ask me?
I'm not the one who authored the rules, nor do I "break" them.
But since you asked…
Why not?
Personally, I think it's great!
It provides opportunities for both downloaders, as well as uploaders.
If you don't like offering, just move on to the one that does suit you.@cannonmc:

I've seen several possible duplicates; same titles, same size, same pics, etc. But more often than not, the file type is not listed. Short of downloading both files, how can we tell what kinds of files they are? I assume that you guys in Admin can tell; so I've reported a couple of these cases. Was this the right thing to do?
-
The file type should show if you hover over the file line in the Size/Infos column of the torrent list page.
If not (and I haven't seen this), click to the torrent page and click on Show Full List in the Num Files line. If that still doesn't work and you are desperate to know, you could download the torrent file, open it and your torrent client will show what you would download if you clicked OK. You don't need to download it.

Cool! I hadn't noticed this feature before. Thanks!

I have 3 questions about reporting dupes:
1.) Can I report a dupe torrent with no seeder (new torrent)?
2.) Can I report a dead dupe torrent? I mean sometimes its only dead temporarily, and can be revived when you ask for seeders. (I am reporting this so they can be deleted by admins, not for the sake of SB but just my OCD kicking in. ;D )
and lastly:
3.) Should I report a dupe torrent when the original torrent is dead? Many times and I am guilty of this, but seeders prefer to seed the newer torrent knowing, or not, that it is a dupe torrent because it was FL'ed. What should be done in this situation?
