Idea to greatly eliminate incomplete uploads / seeding problems - FEEDBACK PLEASE!
-
It seems that a lot of people are uploading torrents with QTM, then shutting down before the torrent has a chance to SEED even once..
I have a solution for that! Either assign, or better yet, have users PURCHASE a cloud of storage.. let's say.. $1 per gig, into which their uploaded files would go. Those files would stay there even when the uploader goes offline, and remain there until their cloud is full and is overwritten by new files - in a LIFO - Last In - First Out system.
I would LOVE to hear feedback about this idea!

I'm not going to pretend to understand all of the details of how torrents actually work or the running of this site. However, there are a couple of things in your post that struck me.
Firstly, your idea sounds virtually the same as renting a seedbox, which can be done for significantly less than $1 per GB. I've been shopping around recently, and have seen deals for around £9 per month for a TB of storage and 10 Gb/s up/down speeds with no traffic limit. Granted, the speeds may vary, but it's still a good way of seeding properly and does wonders for your ratio.
Secondly, if this site was to actually offer (or require) you to rent server space off it then I suspect this might have detrimental effects. In general most torrent sites are only able to operate based on the fact that they don't host any copyrighted material. If they start renting out server space that you need to put your uploads into then even if hosted externally it might be argued that the site itself is, by proxy, hosting such material, which could open it up to enforceable legal action.
Hopefully more knowledgeable people will be able to weigh in on this.

The Dropbox copyright policy :
Important note on copyrighted material
You should only use shared folders, public links, and photo galleries for files that you have the legal right to share with others (for example, documents, photos, software, music, and videos that you personally created). You do not have the right to share files unless you own the copyright in them or have been given permission by the copyright owner to share them. Purchasing or legally acquiring video, music, ebooks, or software does not give you the right to share that material with third parties over the Internet.
If you have any doubts about whether you have the legal right to share certain files, you should not share them. By using the shared folder, public folder, or photo galleries features you represent that files placed in those folders do not violate the Dropbox Terms of Service and that you own all copyrights to them or have been given permission by the copyright owner to share them. Dropbox has adopted a policy of terminating the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe copyright or whose accounts are subject to multiple infringement allegations. If you repeatedly share files that infringe others’ copyrights, your account will be terminated.

This is absolutely on target.
