Gay fans of Doctor Who

I am a big fan of Doctor Who, always have been. Recently, I was told that the show has disproportionately high following among LGBT people, and I was wondering if that was the case.
I don't know a lot of Doctor Who fans irl, and can't generalise them. Any Doctor Who fans here?

I binge-watched Dr. Who a few years ago all the way up to the end of the 11th Doctor. I really liked the series even though what was going on was kind of lost to me at times.

I'm a Dr Who fan - with the caveat that I prefer Drs 2, 4, 5, 9 and 10 and didn't particularly care for 11 or 12.
It has a substancial LGBT following since it has a significant amount of queer content. Even the early Doctors had queer subtext (particularly 2 and 5.) Dr 9 was explicitly bisexual (or pansexual) and introduced Captain Jack Harkness - that swashbuckling slut. The Master is Intersex/Transgendered existing in both male and female personae. The last Companion was a Lesbian. Dr. 13 is a woman.
I can't put my finger on what I dislike about the more recent seasons - on paper they look great but stuff just doesn't work.

@torrhuz: Doctor Who isn't a binge-worthy series beyond maybe a few episodes at a time.
@JohnAllenson: Agree on all points, and big fan of 10 as well.
I feel that 11 didn't have the dramatic acting chops that 10 did. Any scene that required the doctor to be enraged just looked funny with him.
And Steven Moffat went berserk on the time-travelling loopholes. It became impossible to keep track of which companion died how many times, and whatever the hell was up with River Song. Just because you're doing a few seasons doesn't mean you get to reset the universe as and when you like.
With 12 too, the storylines were an issue, and they kept jumping the shark too often.I agree on the LGBT context in Doctor Who, and Sci-Fi in general has always been a little progressive compared to other genres. It was weird to see Doctors 10 and 11 being almost exclusively heterosexual though. 13's reveal was a big moment for me, and I have high hopes from the new showrunner too.

I so wanted to love the show and part of me does, but the treatment of the companions has been a deal-breaker for me.
Nearly every companion arc ends horribly and to me, for no other reason than gratification of the show-runner. Rose is trapped, Donna had entire years of her life erased, Amy and Rory were sacrificed, Clara as well (essentially - but definitely Danny, now that I think about that arc), and also Bill. Martha somehow managed to survive and then there's Jack, but Jack was immortal before he met The Doctor. Just… sours the rest of it for me.
Perhaps 13 will be better.
