Not the only ones to notice this slow down on the loading of the website - I too am in the UK and thought something was going on but as you mentioned the problems appeared as soon as the free leech option was introduced. Not good as everything was going fine previous to that.
The old saying "if it ain't broke then don't try to fix it" springs to mind
