    • Download Manager versus Torrent Client Question

I am someone who used Lime back in the days of America On Line and have used P2P sites so I'm familiar with the whole process.

But I am guessing - if I am understanding the whole process in this forum/site correctly, my refusal to want to download, much less refusal to want to use a torrent client (I'm using Free Download Manger as a standalone Mac app on my laptop) is going to prevent me from getting any seeding points?

Free Download Manager (when I have it open) has shown me as seeding the one torrent I downloaded yesterday, and I kept it up and open while I was doing other stuff, but I see no indication that it showed anything as far as this site goes?

I'll make it a separate question once I look into it some more, but I am also guessing that the fact that I am a Mac user is going to make it a painful experience to attempt to upload torrents to maintain any kind of membership here?

    • RE: Seeding and leeching

@john32123666 Yeah, I read through all that and I'm sure the OP here read through all that, but some of it is not helpful and I'm used to P2P sites and was a Lime user back in the days before I ended up with a badly infected PowerPC Mac and lost all my data when they idiot computer shop wiped my HD versus pulling it out like I asked them to. But enough about my ancient history.

For example, I'm not using a torrent client so I'm not clear on how I can show I am seeding (even though Free Download Manager is clearly showing that I AM seeding the one torrent I did download yesterday).

And I'm also not clear on how to 'point' to this file on my laptop either, and again I'm not some newbie - but assume that's simply a lack of torrent client issue.

Finally, as a Mac user, it looks like trying to upload torrents is going to way more production than it looks like some others here even manage, based on a cursory look at some of the torrents I looked it with the model in the one torrent I wanted.

My point is that some of this FAQ stuff is not 'plain English' even for those for whom that is their primary language so likely a problem for the majority of those for whom English is a second language.

    • RE: How do I watch the videos?

@Xezak Not sure if you ever resolved this but I just wanted to add that as an iPad user, I would not use your tablet to try to download anything other than small files for emails, etc.

If you do not have a computer, and only have a smartphone and the iPad, you probably do not want to attempt torrents. Even a simple cheap Chrome laptop which I would not otherwise recommend, will be a better option.

However, if you do own a Mac computer, there are several options for you to torrent. You can create a new question and ask. Good luck.

    • RE: Seeding and leeching

@Sleepyalot I'm not the one to answer the ratio question, but seeding and leeching are basic to peer to peer and torrent sites, and you can look the terms up on either the Urban dictionary or something like that or Wikipedia to better understand them.

Essentially, to seed is to have a file sit on your computer and make it available (in the case of this site, for other torrent users) to be able to download because you (and hopefully others) are seeding the file. I tried to grab a file about ten hours ago without realizing no one was seeding it when I selected it so after a few hours, I disconnected then came back here and ask if someone could see it. I reopened my torrent client (a client is simply a way to grab/download a torrent file) and eventually - while I was streaming a comedy special and downloading some graphic novels, I realized that I had the entire, half GB file! I've let it sit there (even though that's not where I keep/want my porn) since the important thing about seeding is to have it in the same place you download originally too). i will eventually duplicate the file to move it to my backup external, but that's irrelevant to your question.

Someone else may have a better explanation but leeching essentially means you are downloading/grabbing files without SEEDING back. Essentially, if I had just download my 500MB and then walked away without leaving the file there and providing the option for others to grab it, then I am a LEECH.

Hope this helps but also go look at the FAQ.

    • RE: What series are you currently watching?

I'm on the last month of a free Apple TV+ subscription. I'm in the middle of S2 of Mythic Quest, which is surprisingly good and also the After Party - which is both different but also funny and good. Of course, I saw both seasons of Ted Lasso, but can also recommend a lot of their non-fiction stuff, especially HOME for those who like architecture and design, as well as their nature stuff - currently the dinosaur series but the nighttime film is great and the three seasons of the motorcycle travel with Ewan McGregor is also interesting. Of particularly interest, people might check out the documentary series Visible. And for those into SF, For All Mankind. I have not yet checked out the other stuff, like SEE, or FOUNDATION and probably won't until I decide to subscribe again in six months or so.

I had a friend who was letting me use their Netflix account for years but really found it to be a lot of dross and I am glad I never paid for it. I thought Q-Force was just really forcing what humor it had and generally badly scripted and conceptualized. I did enjoy the Sandman but I'm not really a fan of horror and I hope they move away from it for S2 as the graphic novels do. The parts of this series I enjoyed were the things like the story about Hob and the dreams of the cats, versus the stuff that tries to hit the horror elements.

    • RE: What song are you currently listening to?

I recently (last summer?) discovered an Irish singer-songwriter who goes by JC Stewart. He has some dance numbers where he does the vocals and likely wrote most of the words, with Armin van Buuren ('Come Around Again') go HERE to listen and with Jonasu ('On My Mind') plus also collaborations with Billen Ted ('24/7') and 2020 Kids ('Too Many Nights') -- but mostly he's a straight-forward alternative type (guitar or piano) wordsmith with a really great voice. You can easily find his music on You Tube and decide if it's for you.

Otherwise, I have a very eclectic taste in music, from the Cure to Nina Simone or Ella Fitzgerald to the Pet Shop Boys and New Order.
