Gay media in general is pretty much bunk. Even though it may fall into the category you call "cheesy sentimentality", I found Big Eden to be quite endearing.
It depends is the person doing it, "The Master", is he doing it for pleasure or pain.
If they both are doing it for the subjects pleasure it is BDSM. If the Master is only doing it to cause pain it is torture.
