The New Picture Browser - Feedback
-
so requests:
change the menu bar from 'browser' to 'picture browser'
and some indication of order in which images are loading - or even control - eg by date uploaded as its not clear and SA feedback suggests its loading randomly which has its uses but isnt as useful as loading by date uploaded or theme etcbut great addition for those who hunt via images anyway….......
BIG THUMB UP - to the tumblr styleee new browse feature
-
Some answers to the functionality at the moment of writing this:
- By default, the display of pictures is of random torrents, supposed to be one picture by torrent
- Display of pictures can be selected to be from some categories only
- Display of pictures can be selected to be by date/time descending by checking "[ ] Sort by latest torrent first". Then all pictures of a torrent will be shown (this is likely to be changed)
- By default, the display of pictures is of random torrents, supposed to be one picture by torrent
-
Is it possible to have the same sort features as the search page instead of just a choice between random, or Most recent?
I find a sort by seed/sort by leech and times snatched more useful that just simply most recently uploaded? -
thank you for so much valued feedback :hug2:
the filter options get extended.. while trying to optimize the database queries to get some better speed.
more sort orders and also a search field will be added like on regular torrent searchi was wondering when people ask to change the menu. we thought about this quite a while. but picbrowser is somehow to long

Thanks for making this interface! As it is, it's not terribly useful to me, but I spent a couple of minutes playing around and think it has a lot of potential. Maximizing the usefulness of new UIs requires matching them to the way your users actually operate, so I'll share my MO here:
My usual MO on the regular search page is to use the combination of title, short description, and category –- all taken in in a few seconds while scrolling --- to identify torrents that are potentially promising, then scroll over the thumbnails to see the expanded images. If the torrent still looks promising at this point I open it up in the background for later perusal, as I continue to check out all the torrents new to the site. So the pic information is actually secondary, and I really expect to be able to see the torrents in chronological order so that I can catch up on the new torrents since I last visited.
As is, the PictureBrowser is not a better option than regular search for me because:
- it doesn't make it visually clear which pictures correspond to which torrent: I have to manually mouse over each image to separate them out --- you actually already provide most of the meta-information I want (except the size) in the mouse over, so all that's needed here is to visually separate the various torrents, e.g. by using a thick frame to outline the pics corresponding to one torrent. whitespace is the best tool!
- it doesn't seem to show all the latest content even when the "sort by latest torrent first" button is turned on; I see a lot of stuff from years ago very high up in the list.
- it's not clear how torrents are chosen to displayed : this is more of a psychological issue. If you used something definite and intuitive like peak number of seeders or amount of seedpoints, chosen to be reflective of the `desirability' of the torrent, and made this clear, I'd feel much less discomforted about allowing the PictureBrowser to guide me.
I imagine all three of these points are easily remedied.

I quite like the new concept of browsing by image. I agree that it would be easier to see the images if they were better organised with a small border and perhaps lined up. This would make it easier to scan.
Would it possible to add a couple more images with the description as one rolls over?
Also, it does take a while to load chunks of images. It looks like there's some sort of dynamic process to retrieve these images rather than pulling some preprocessed ones for faster download…
Otherwise, I love it. Thanks guys! :thx: -
Terrible! Please noooo! It's a cluster fuck in a bad way. Make the image larger but still vertical scrolling. I can't use this format.

I think it's a good start. Overall, I like the idea. A bit of padding around the images might make it a bit easier on the eyes. I love that the files appear in what seems to be a random order, so older torrents show up near the top. That will be great for keeping some torrents alive longer and reviving some old ones, too.
Is there any chance of getting the "clear all" and "set all" buttons from the search page on the filters for the browse page? It's a bit of a pain to have to tick or untick all of the boxes to filter the images.
The biggest problem I see is that some of the images are the thumbnail sheet from video capture software. For those torrents, the image is really 10 - 20 tiny images that cannot be seen. Perhaps this could be fixed by giving uploaders the option (or requirment) to select one full-size image to be the display image for the browse page.
That criticism aside, I think you're on to a great idea. We still have the old search option available, so it's great to have a choice there.
Thanks!

I like it. At lest as it doesn't screw up the old way. The option is there and it was a bit redundant. Me, I like the old way, but then I'm old … ish And here, just for you, because it is awesomely annoyingjavascript:void(0);
Hello from SXSW. I actually live at ground zero.

testing: if you select "Sort by latest torrent first" it shows just one pic for each torrent, ordered by latest first.
also no recycled torrents are shown hereunfortunately we cannot choose "the cover" and other interesting attributes yet
i also added the size of the torrent, time_ago uploaded and the amount of seeders / leechers for more information
i have not much time to work on. Stay tuned.

Wow, nice. Those changes made a huge difference in usability.

At first i was like - what the f… - but after reading your explanation i must admit - i like that idea. Certainly, it can't replace the regular browsing/search page, but it's a really cool alternative.
Some ideas of how you could improve it in my opinion:
1. add information about what it is and how it works
2. add some customization:- 'select all' button
- (maximum) picture size
- nb of pictures per page
- nb of pictures per torrent to be shown
- a switch of whether to show covers or just random pics
3. Some time ago i proposed to revive the tagging system (https://forum.gaytorrent.ru/index.php?topic=18172.0). It seems you've improved your initial idea and implemented it in a slightly different way (after downloading the torrent we vote for 5 categories it should belong to). As i'm not entirely sure how it works (If i select to see only >twink< category, will the conventional browsing page / the new browsing page show me also torrents uploaded to the >twink< category that have been voted bareback?), maybe you could add sorting by tags too, if applicable.
4. A search box. This way i could see in pictures all >twink< videos starring "Jordan Fox".
5. OR => AND/OR,NOT. As far as i know currently the OR function is in use. If i select >twink< and >military< categories it shows torrents from either of those categories. It'd be nice though to be able to use another logical funtions. This way i could see all movies that are both >military< and >twink< or an another example - all >bareback< films that are not >asian< (but to be honest the switch between OR and AND would be totally sufficient)
Good job guys. Greetings,
Mike -
I'll admit I was startled at the the pics view at first, but I quickly found out that the search page was still pretty much the same so I certainly wan't annoyed. In fact, I've come to like this newer view and the roll-overs are very helpful. One thing I could see some getting annoyed about is the load time for the pics, but I've got a relatively older machine (it started life as a Vista machine), yet it handles the loading process reasonably well. No complaints there, really. But I could easily see someone still running XP and finding it slow. Still, everyone gets used to one thing and change is loathed. Hey! Look at how much I loathed Vista! Well, of course, I was right on that one, but even so, it had some things that I learned to love: the breadcrumbs trail at the top of Windows Explorer (which, hopefully, MS is finally calling their file manager – jeeze, even people at MS had problems figuring out if you were talking about WE or IE) and the Windows Photo Viewer (which for some insane [oh, let's just blame Ballmer] was dumbed down for 7).
I'll stop babbling now….

i am new to the site ,but i love the picture browser. it allows easy access.
-
Too much going on ???
soooooo slow :cry2: -
I love the picture browser. Great idea. I much prefer it to wading through lists of names, especially when all I'm doing is hovering over each one to look at the pictures.
Please keep it!
-
It is just another OPTION!! and I love it! I Like how I can still click only the categories I want display….
THANKS!! Only one Suggestion I have always wanted .. Because of bandwidth .. I do not want to see 6gb torrents, cuz I could never get them anyway... It would be awesome if we could set a couple size limits to show. Like, ANY, or <6gb <3gb <1gb >500mb etc!!
Great Job.. Keep the app UP!! Nice Programming!!!! Always like to see ne things!! :cheesy2:
-
I think its neat, but it does take a while to load up all the thumbnails
-
When you hover over pictures or even move around, I think the Black info box comes up way to fast and sorta ruins the experience.
You should think about turning that down a bit.. (delay) like ??maybe 2-3 seconds after the mouse has stopped on a pic before the info box pops up.Looking KEWL!!!
