Weird story. 1. Black-Latinx, Fat & Pro-Fat, Portland City Councilor Candace Avalos, suffers fire.
A five-count charging document released by prosecutors accuses Vashon M. Locust of reckless burning, second-degree mischief and trespassing, all misdemeanors.
Officers say Locust, 51, sneaked into a shed near Avalos’ home and tried to use an electric outlet, but it didn’t work. He allegedly set a small fire to stay warm, but later explained to investigators that it got out of control
By the time Portland Fire & Rescue crews rushed to the scene about 2:40 a.m. Oct. 26, the flames had engulfed a truck and hatchback sedan, as well the wooden carport, two storage lockers and [Avalos] townhome’s exterior wall.

[Avalos] and her cat escaped the flames without suffering physical harm. But in a constituent newsletter published before the arrest, Avalos said she and her neighbors were still reeling in the fire’s wake, and questioned police statements that the attack was not targeted.
“Whatever the cause, this didn’t happen in a vacuum,” she wrote Thursday. “In our current national context, it’s hard not to connect this moment to everything happening around us — the threats, the division, the way public service sometimes puts a target on your back.”
Avalos is frequently the subject of online attacks [ed: but real or staged?] and reported that her office received an email [ed: but from who?] that stated “hope the entire state burns and your house is the first one to go” just a few days before the fire.

The Portland Police Bureau provided The Oregonian/OregonLive with a 38-item “list of investigative steps” that shows how authorities scoured surveillance footage from TriMet and nearby businesses while seeking the suspect they have now identified.

In a statement released Tuesday, Avalos changed her stance — pivoting from remarks last week that suggested police had overlooked the possibility of a political attack — and instead suggesting the case was about demonization of the homeless.

Avalos...is one of three people representing District 1, which encompasses all of Portland east of Interstate 205 and some portions of the city between 82nd Avenue and the freeway. The district has the lowest median income and the highest proportion of people of color.
Avalos is homed & after she bought, neighborhood was magically cleaned up (profits her).
Avalos became a homeowner two years ago at the age of 34, a fact she proudly announced on social media at the time. The home she bought sits in a townhome complex across from a large parking lot and a vacant grass-covered parcel.
The street has seen its share of challenges in recent years, including a rotation of homeless encampments and RVs, crime and prostitution, said Warren Womack, a retiree who has lived on the street corner of the block for more than eight years. The tents and RV’s were cleaned up only in the past few months, replaced by large soil-filled barrels.
