Why does cookie sessions last such a short time?
-
In pretty much any website you can login and stay logged for a really long time even if you don't necessarily visit the site every day, but on GT and here on the forum if you don't visit twice a day your session expires. Why does it have to be like this?

What is a Session Cookie?
Session cookies expire once you log off or close the browser. They are only stored temporarily and are destroyed after leaving the page.
They are also known as transient cookies, non-persistent cookies, or temporary cookies. If you have to log in to a website every time you open your browser and visit it, then it is using a session cookie to store your login credentials.
This is unlike a persistent cookie, which contains an expiration date. Many websites use session cookies for essential site functions.
Additionally, they make sure pages are sent to the browser as quickly and efficiently as possible. -
@ianfontinell This setting modification was made for security reasons. As such, the session cookie will only last for 6 hours. This is for your security.

Not true. Many sites...for the same security reason explained here...will close the session or log you out after a certain period of inactivity. I encounter that on a few sites I use, such as medical sites, etc. Simply doesn't happen on "pretty much any website" as you say.
