Good torrents for an accidental leecher?
-
Hi everyone,
Firstly sorry if this is a stupid question and/or has already been answered.
Right - fantastic site, and great downloads. But despite the fact that I am seeding (I think!) everything I download, and doing that thing where you seed even as you download ("Initial Seeding" on uTorrent, on Mac), and despite trying to find a few torrents with loads of leechers, I've uploaded only a few tends of MB!
Is there an easy way to find excellent torrents to download to upload my ratio? I've disabled my download, so I'm upload only at the moment, but I'm going to get suspended in a day or so unless I fix this cock-up and massively improve my ratio :s
Thanks!

First, disable "Initial Seeding", this is only useful for low bandwidth uploaders IF they upload an OWN NEW torrent.
Then try new torrents, 1 seed only, before too many other members are jumped-on before you. Avoid torrents said to be original upload at an earlier date and avoid torents with multiple files.
Read the topic about starting on the right feet here in the Forum.
you have only seed about 16 hours, that isn't much …

Good question, PP.
The best way to increase your ratio is to find a torrent with the least amount of seed and the greatest amount of leeches. For instance, if you jump on a newly created torrent, especially one that hasn't had any completed downloads, and keep seeding for as long as possible, that should help your ratio.
You might also want to check your bittorrent client settings. Some default settings aren't the most optimal, depending on which client you're using. On uTorrent, choose Preferences, then Bandwidth. If your max upload rate is set to 0, that pretty much means "upload as much as I possibly can".
Another thing to take into account is your ISP. Some really throttle upload speeds, especially if they're monitoring bittorrent protocols.
Hope that helps.

Actually you should not set your global upload bandwidth to "0" means unlimited in µTorrent but to not more than 80% of your internet connections upload rate. Else it may shoke the communication.
µTorrent got an Installation Guide with a Bandwidth test. Run that while you do ot upload/download or do other internet activity. µTorren proposes than an adapted setting.
To avoid the throttleing by your ISP, you should activate the Protocol encryption and not accept incomming not clear connections. It may help, but might not be enough if your ISP uses adavnced techniques to detect bittorrent exchanges. On the other hand, I've seed high download rates by you …

Thank you everyone for the advice, I shall try to follow it all!
Uwe: yes, the download rate is damn good, considering it's only ADSL. I've made sure to force encrypted connections. I had the upload rate set to max, now I've set it to something smaller manually so it doesn't choke.
However I can 't find the integrated upload speed test you mentioned; perhaps it's only available on the Windows client?
Many thanks all; if I can't get my ratio up quickly, then I'll be stuck in upload-only mode for a while. C'est la vie, and it's fair. I'll just have to ask people to download stuff I've got!

PP,
On the Windows version, I found it under Options, then Setup Guide. Once that box opens, there's a button at the bottom that says "Run Tests". Hope that helps.
