Creation of Duplicate Torrents
-
On the note of duplicate torrents, I'm aware of the generally accepted 10% rule for size difference, however this is a little different when working with DVD-R torrents, since there are two different types of DVD discs (single layer, and dual layer). Say for example that a torrent already exists on the tracker in DVD-R format, however the format it is in is in DVD-9 (dual layer) format, however the version that I have is in DVD-5 (single layer) format. Would uploading a DVD-5 of the same DVD (including the menu structure and such) constitute a duplicate torrent?
If so, then there is another question to be asked, seeing as how there are two different primary formats that can be used for DVD-R format uploads. The real question here is that if the existing torrent already exists in DVD-9 format and is in the raw .vob file format in a VIDEO_TS folder, and the DVD-5 version that I have is in a disc image format such as .iso, is the difference in the format composition enough to render it a "different format", or would it still constitute a duplicate?

DVD-R is the format, regardless if it comes in VOB or ISO.
DVD9 and DVD5 are different, so that is an allowable difference. However, I'm not sure this should be allowed, see below.
Modern porn (last few/several years) is being done in DVD9, so a DVD5 is either "shrunk" or had parts removed. Shrinking DVD-Rs tends to reduce quality quite a bit, while removing parts defeats the naming of it DVD-R.

Thank you for the clarification. I will go back to my bf and get the original store bought discs that are in the original DVD-9 format and will rip them to ISO in such a manner that they will retain their original DVD-9 format, as well as keep the non DVD (DVD-ROM) content contained within the original untouched ISO.
Given that there's a certain amount of question as to whether or not uploading a DVD-5 version when a DVD-9 version already exists would constitute a "duplicate", may I suggest a discussion among the staff to see if a mutual decision can be made collectively among the staff? My goal here is to be sure that everyone can be on the same page, and that the rules are made clear in order to be fair to everyone. While you are correct in that the size difference alone renders it another format, it stands to reason that it is in essence uploading another copy of a torrent that already exists, just in inferior quality by comparison.
Don't get me wrong though, I also would seem to think that uploading a DVD-5 when a DVD-9 does exist could constitute a duplicate, particularly seeing as how if you have a program such as DVD Shrink, you can render the DVD-5 version yourself. So all that being said, is this something you can bring to the staff for discussion for me please? I think it may help to clear a lot of potential headache in the future.

"DVD-R" is the name for a media: DVD-Recordable. This media exist mainly in two versions, single sided single layer DVD-5 with a capacity of ~ 4.36 GB and single sided double layer DVD-9 with ? (next to 9 GB) capacity.
These media can contain different formats of data and structure:
- DVD Video
- DVD Audio
- DVD Data
Here we speak about DVD Video which contain files in a certain structure : .IFO .BUP .VOB and using to encode audio and video only a limited number of codecs with a limited set of parameters used (Profiles, . e.g. main@main for MPEG-2 video). See as well our FAQ > http://tracker.gaytorrent.ru/faq.php#489 (English FAQ)
While at the beginning of publishing DVD (pressed, not recorded), the DVD-5 single side, single layer media was frequently used because much less expensive. Today the pressed DVD-9 are more common. However still today, some original DVD are DVD-5, I own for example the "Roboter" DVD from Cazzo, which is DVD-5.
When DVD-9 became widely used for original pressed DVD, recordable double layer DVD were not available, respectively very expensive and HDD space not affordable either. Therefore many DVD-9 when ripped got shrunk and/or parts removed (bonus, languages, trailer, FBI warning, …) to fit on DVD-5 DVD-R's.
The above said makes it difficult to right away ban DVD-5:
- It can be the original not shrunk, not parts removed DVD copy
- It can be a older DVD ripped long agao, no longer available in distribution of which no DVD-9 1:1 copy circulates
Therefore my personal preference goes to the following rule:
Don't allow a DVD-R in DVD-5, if a DVD-9 version is already available (be it ISO or ad DVD data files)Shrinking a DVD-9 to DVD-5 can have the same effect on picture quality reduction than encoding a good AVI …

Ah. You do bring a good point there. My only "qualm" with DVD-5 is that in some cases, the DVD-5 format is a shrunk down version of a DVD-9 format. I can definitely appreciate the disc space that it would require, as I myself am finding a constant need to upgrade my hard drive storage capacity.
Perhaps you are correct in that leaving things the way they are for now is probably the better way of doing things. Thank you for this information.

@ Uwe
While all that is technically true about the definition of DVD-R, the way DVD-R is used here, the R refers more to "replica".
Otherwise I can upload tons of multi converted trash and call it DVD-R. Using "DVD-R only means it's recordable media" definition means I can drag a video through RM converters 30 times and rip every shred of quality out of it, then make it into a "DVD-R" and all is fine.

@raphjd : Yes, I know, as I said@Uwe:
…
Here we speak about DVD Video which contain files in a certain structure : .IFO .BUP .VOB and using to encode audio and video only a limited number of codecs with a limited set of parameters used (Profiles, . e.g. main@main for MPEG-2 video). See as well our FAQ > http://tracker.gaytorrent.ru/faq.php#489 (English FAQ) …and like you I hate so called DVD or DVD-R or DVD Video, which are either shrunk or worse created from an AVI or other more compressed files (worst from rm files), because like you I prefer the original quality.
That is the reason why I said not to allow a DVD-5 if already a DVD-9 exists, because then it is for sure that the DVD-5 is a shrunk and/or left out parts copy = bad. Edit: This will be an additional restriction to the current rules already laid out there > http://forum.gaytorrent.ru/index.php?topic=3595.0
Of course this means a DVD Video disk ripped to DVD Video format files, i.e. ISO or DVD Video Data files (means at least the VIDEO_TS folder) only, see above link.

Another rule that needs to be enforced, is the naming one.
Too many people are just uploading VIDEO_TS folders and it causes problems when you try to download a couple of DVD-Rs like this. This needs to be put in a 2nd folder with the video's proper name.
