Only CULTURALLY COMPETENT users should remove torrents from Themed Movies / TV
-
We're having a lot of problems with gay-related torrents posted to Themed Movies and TV/Episodes being deleted at random, for no good reason.
Moderators often do not understand the language and culture of the original film, and therefore are not culturally competent to make decisions about the level of gayness, especially when the film is older and adheres to ancient "wink wink" production codes, or has closeted characters, or makes frequent references to repressed homosexuality, etc.
Different moderators make totally different decisions. A movie that is allowed by one moderator is deleted by the next. The rules for posting Themed Movies and TV / Episodes are poorly written in ESL, and they are hard to interpret. The rules also explicitly forbid "gay-interest", which is not a real word. Nobody knows what it means. Do we really want to forbid everything that is interesting to gays on a site named "gaytorrents"?
As a result of this confusion, what gets deleted and what is allowed to stay is completely random.
I completely understand that there are very few moderators and they are very, very busy. They are donating lots of time and effort. We appreciate their hard work! Everyone on this site appreciates the hard work that moderators do!!! But it's not unreasonable to ask that the rules be clearly written, understandable, and equitably applied. The totally random nature of deletions is proof that nobody understands the rules, or agrees on what they mean.
I propose a change that would allow real GTRU users to determine "is it gay enough?":
1) If a moderator thinks a movie isn't gay enough, they create a forum post, put a link in the torrent comments, and ask people to comment in the forums. This forum post can be reused to explain the democratic decision of the users, every time the same movie is posted in different formats.
2) If users with matching cultural competency think it is gay enough, then it won't be removed. Cultural competency means they speak the original language of the film and grew up in the area where the film was made. These are the only people who really understand all the code-forbidden subtext, the closeted characters, the repressed desire…
In essence, we're asking Moderators to socialize the decision before removing torrents from Themed Movies and TV/Episodes categories. That will allow many more GTRU users to participate in these discussions. It will also provide an interesting and educational forum on the cultural meanings of gay-related films from all over the globe and from many different eras. After we make this change, these deletions will much less random, and everyone will understand why they were deleted, which means they will be much more likely to agree with the decision.
To make our torrents more interesting to a wider variety of gays, I also propose three additional changes:
-
Movies and shows that are interesting only because of naked hot men may be posted, in their entirety, under "Voyeur", but not Themed Movies / TV. Lots of real GTRU users want to see these naked hot men. Why would we delete torrents of naked hot men, from a site called "gaytorrents"? SYNONYMES (2019) keeps getting deleted, despite the fact that it opens with an extended sequence of a hot Middle Eastern guy stroking his semi-erect cock in a shower. That is legitimate Voyeur material and should not be deleted, to say nothing of the steamy, repressed homoerotic tension that pervades the film, but which is much less obvious to anyone who doesn't understand French.
-
Movies and shows that have unsimulated straight sex (but no gay characters) may be posted, in their entirety, under "Straight Younger" or "Straight Older", but not Themed Movies / TV. These movies are basically straight porn with a fancy script and better production values. We allow straight porn here, when properly categorized. These films should not be deleted.
-
Movies and shows that are essential to the history of drag are also allowed. This would include classics with Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Doris Day, etc. There are not many of these, and they are beloved of drag queens all the world over. We should not delete drag classics from a site named "gaytorrents"!
Please reply and vote on each change that I've proposed! If the majority of GTRU users think I am a useless idiot, I will shut up and go away
PS – I've noticed that East- and Southeast-Asian films with subtle homoeroticism, repressed/non-explicit gay characters, or concealed/closeted characters are never deleted from this site, despite being against the letter of the rules. I suspect that one of the moderators has excellent cultural competency in East and SE Asia, so they understand the subtle clues that tell the audience that this character or situation is gay, despite the obfuscations introduced by directors, censors, and code standards. I respect and appreciate this moderator's subtle understanding of locally-produced films. All I am asking for is the same consideration for non-Asian films.
Thank you for your thoughts! Torrent trackers are both supremely democratic, and uniquely individualistic. This site's users are what make it an awesome place. Without you, this site would be nothing. So please demand a vote on every decision.

-
What you're proposing seems well-reasoned and the discussions would also be interesting.

Do you have any other examples that keep getting deleted?
-
Last year, when it first came out, SYNONYMES was posted about a dozen times and then deleted (because of "NO THEMED", not because of DMCA or duplication). Some of the more recent uploads were not deleted, including a 45GB Bluray that was never fully seeded. I don't know why. This demonstrates the random nature of the moderator's decisions. It would be nice if we had some consistency.
If we had a democratic and culturally competent forum for making these decisions, we would all know why these movies were kept or deleted.
-
If the server and database space allows, maybe some torrents can be listed as Killed due to (Reason) instead of deleted outright, or put into a category called Questionable Category especially since not all copies or versions were removed in the example you give. (The power for trusted moderators to delete should stay alive for a variety of reasons).
If six of twelve were deleted due to inconsistency in applying site rules, the alarm does not ring too loud. You will not find one site that will have moderators that all act and perform the same, especially unpaid volunteers.
Will it be possible to find any one exacting example in which all possible varied versions were deleted?
Ugh, now I have two copies of this movie: one with the e and one without the e.
-
The power for trusted moderators to delete should stay alive for a variety of reasons
I agree 100%.
DMCA, possibly underage, obviously doesn't belong here (like when someone posted the latest AVENGERS). These should all be deleted immediately by trusted moderators.
My proposals are more about the Themed Movie and TV / Episodes postings that are in a gray area – definitely gay-related, definitely of interest to some GTRU users, but maybe or maybe not compliant with the poorly-written and super confusing ESL rules for these categories.
Let everyone have a vote.
-
NOTE: I have not watched the examples provided, so my comments are generic.
This isn't a democracy.
Also, the rules are clear. There must be an LGBT theme throughout.
A single gay character on screen for 15 seconds doesn't count.
A group of gays on screen for 30 seconds doesn't count.
A cute lead actor doesn't count.
A cute guy in his underwear for 2 minutes (ie; Tom Cruise in Risky Business) doesn't count.
"Gay Interest" such as nude scenes can be cut out and uploaded. HOWEVER "gay interest" isn't enough for the whole thing to be uploaded.
-
Your passion for this topic is admirable. Themed is totally my favorite category.
Depending on your stance, there might be one potential way that everyone already has a vote in addressing this particular issue: if their valid wrongly-deleted Themed torrent is valuable enough, it can be uploaded and shared again if they saved their copy locally. When anyone downloads it, that is another vote. Another way is in posting a request for it.
Regarding grey areas in the Themed category, will admit that I have recently uploaded at least one Themed torrent that was expected to be deleted, and definitely would have under the older rules - there were even comments on it directly about it being valid for the Themed category. Only uploaded it because the gay themed elements in it meant a lot to me even though the majority of the movie was mainstream. It was and still remains the only version, and it is still alive three weeks later with 21 seeders, 2 leechers, and 84 snatches. This may not be the best rebuttal example, but it is one instance of several where my faith in this site and the moderators continue to be validated.
This means to me that rules here are fluid and that they do change over time, usually if not always, for the better. Should something become an issue on an ongoing basis, it will eventually be noticed and addressed. Of course there will be times that something will not fall in the norm of how things or issues are usually treated.
Which ESL rules could use better wording? How would you rewrite them? We all can for the most part enjoy and benefit from betterment of this sharing site.
In posting this particular response, I get a notice that there was a new reply while I was typing. Will add that one form of *democracy that can be exercised here could be in GTFO if one does not like this site or the rules, and this site could lose a member. Another form could be in becoming a moderator if there is room for one and you're qualified and desired to be so.
(*Democracy - is there a better/valid word for my point?)

I know this post personally attack me, I mean look at the title itself "only CULTURALLY COMPETENT users", I've been doing this for years so and mostly I'm the one who often deal with Themed Movie, by the title which mean I don't culturally competent or I'm just not a competent user who happened to be moderator that deals with Themed and TV torrents. I'll try to keep my head cool while replying bit by bit this lovely message.
First, about this culturally competent user. If look at my IMDb page, I am an active member and have been a contributor to the site for almost 11 years, which mean almost half of my life I've been doing movie and TV in general for more than a decade. I also have a website which I run personally that cover film, TV, music and entertainment news. I was picked and trusted to moderate Themed and TV because that was on my CV. So, if you still think that I'm not competent to handle this stuff, please show me yours, what's your competence to be able to judge me incompetence in my job.
To be clear, every moderators agree and understand the rules. There are always differences, but the rules is one that we all agree on, so we stick with it. There are 2 Mods for Themed and TV, myself and Kalayan, but mostly I'm the one doing Themed torrent moderation because Kalayan have other jobs as moderator. So, if there is something wrong with Themed moderations, they fall to me. So, if there is something wrong and or lack or miss, I'm sorry I'm human, I have a job and I have a real life outside this, sometimes I just don't have time.
So, this is also the answer to some of the replies about why some torrents delete and why others don't. ITS NOT A RANDOM DECISION BECAUSE MODS HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION OR MODS DON'T UNDERSTAND THE RULES OR OR THERE IS GREY AREA OR THE RULES IS BROKEN OR THE RULES IS SHITS! Its because the lack of my man power. Sometimes, if I only have a little time to moderate, I just rely on torrent report, if there is a report I deal with it if there is none. But, mostly I do check the Themed and TV category that's why I found and took down many movies/TVs that not reported that against the rules. Sometimes it slips my eyes, so some torrent stay while other already deleted. So, thank you, this is a great input for me for now on thoroughly scan Themed and TV category for violations of the rules.
Second,
I propose a change that would allow real GTRU users to determine "is it gay enough?":
- If a moderator thinks a movie isn't gay enough, they create a forum post, put a link in the torrent comments, and ask people to comment in the forums. This forum post can be reused to explain the democratic decision of the users, every time the same movie is posted in different formats.
There is a Forum for all moderators called "Doubtful Torrent Issues", we put and discuss all there, about problem in torrent moderation, including themed movie and TV. We all decided what's Yes and what's No. This decision is moderators job not users. That's why we have rules, otherwise why don't we just put everything on Forum so users can decide which one is Yes or No.
Third
- If users with matching cultural competency think it is gay enough, then it won't be removed. Cultural competency means they speak the original language of the film and grew up in the area where the film was made. These are the only people who really understand all the code-forbidden subtext, the closeted characters, the repressed desire…
That's why we have different mods that came from around the world and from different languages. We may still have small group of people but its enough. And once again, this is a Mod's job. If every time like this happens and the process must go with the process that you suggested, better not have a mod at all, just let the users decided everything everytime.
Forth
In essence, we're asking Moderators to socialize the decision before removing torrents from Themed Movies and TV/Episodes categories. That will allow many more GTRU users to participate in these discussions. It will also provide an interesting and educational forum on the cultural meanings of gay-related films from all over the globe and from many different eras. After we make this change, these deletions will much less random, and everyone will understand why they were deleted, which means they will be much more likely to agree with the decision.
Oh come on! Don't be such a hypocrite. You pay visit to Forum because you need something. I've seen your history, you only have 20 Forum comments and thats included this post and few replies and you already make. You only visit here because needed something not to socialize. You're not even ever reply to Introductions Forum where mostly users' first post in the Forum. So, if you are the example you wanna use like your suggestion, I don't what become of this site will be.
Fifth
I don't know if you do understand what's the meaning of movie/film itself. Porn actually part of movie that evolve in times, to only be viewed to adult. While movie in general is for everyone. And then there is more specific part of the movie, its called LGBTQ Themed Movies. GayTorrent.ru is a place for gay porn stuffs, though exception we are broaden into allow straight sex but not significant, who happens also have non porn category LGBTQ Themed/TV. You have to note this, Themed and TV are the only place in the site that's not porn. NOT PORN falls under THEMED/TV category and all the PORN fall into variety of categories.
So, gay interest movie because of naked hot men, unsimulated straight sex in movie that not themed movie, are not allow in the site in any category because they are not PORN and NOT THEMED. Mixing a NOT PORN torrent into PORN category its a bad idea, I think you better than this. Otherwise, why we have category at all? Why just not mixing them up altogether?
Lots of real GTRU users
You mean yourself. You can find those movie outside GayTorrent.ru, there are lots of them. This is a gay site, only LGBTQ is in here. And if we allow gay interest movie in here, I could upload the first movie of Captain America because I feel Chriss Evans is so hot when he's shirtless in the movie. The site will be flooded with torrent that have no boundaries. We don't want that. That's why we have rules.
Sixth
- Movies and shows that are essential to the history of drag are also allowed. This would include classics with Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Doris Day, etc. There are not many of these, and they are beloved of drag queens all the world over. We should not delete drag classics from a site named "gaytorrents"!
I agree with this and we can make an exception to this type of classic movie.
Seventh
They are gay movie and you can clearly watch it from the the script, that's why they are allowed.

(The power for trusted moderators to delete should stay alive for a variety of reasons).
Let me explain a little bit how this works. Mods have ability to change the category of a torrent and there is a category that only Mods can see. We put every torrent that brake he rules there to keep them from public eyes, so we're not directly permanently delete a torrent from the tracker once its brake the rules, except for some severe braking. They will stay there until all the leechers is gone.
And one las thing, for urx585
Torrent trackers are both supremely democratic, and uniquely individualistic.
We are not trying to be an authoritarian here, but you have to remember that this site is also is private owned site and if I'm not mistaken GayTorrent.ru is a a private tracker. . The owner could do anything he want and what he please. He's generous enough to provide us with this such amazing site for our own self fun. But also we have rules. And we mods follow that rule for the better of the site.
So, I've been saying this for many times to you and I will say this one more time, now in public place, you cant just force your own self opinion to accommodate your own agenda. If you can't follow the rules, just go away, there is plenty fishes in the see, go somewhere else place that fit your own.
-
Thank you for the peek behind the scenes. It is a relief that some torrents are hidden and discussed like that, and that just because a torrent cannot be viewed doesn't mean it was actually deleted.
-
Thank you raphjd for pointing that simple rules! :urock:
Like raphjd said and I forget to mention earlier today as I already did https://www.gaytorrent.ru/details.php?id=31de208a60c12c781ea5c725ec39d434a5ac12855d376ca4 all films, TVs, episodes, TV movie must put under Themed and TV, except MOVIE CLIPS, if it has gay themed, it can be put in under Themed or TV or Clips, if its straight or just "gay interest", it can put it under Clips or Straight Younger/Older.
Gay interest allowed but must be in a form of movie clips. And the clips that we're talking about here is the sex clips or hot clips or something that arouse us. For example, click on Search bar "Sex Scene Edit".
-
And one more, to let this all open. This is first post of urx585, complaining my ability to handle torrent moderation.
https://forum.gaytorrent.ru/index.php?topic=62640.msg327173#msg327173
If I'm wrong in my moderation, I admit it and apologize and correct my wrongdoing. We are human and no one is perfect. But this one, when I stand to keep the rules, he keep force his own will and desire, he actually attack me in torrent comment, the first torrent link the post above, and that torrent actually still alive here in the site in Mods' chamber, they still can see and read it.
-
What I think should be a requirement for not only Themed Movies and TV Episodes (possibly for some other areas also?) is the Uploader should explain in the Description WHY something qualifies as having gay content or gay themes. Often they will also simply post a torrent with NO Description at all…which tells downloaders absolutely nothing useful.
I usually try to do that in whatever I upload unless it's blatantly obvious (such as either something in the Description, or screenshots of two men kissing or in bed, etc.). I usually post something like "The gay interest?", followed by the reason why...even if it's only one character or one scene in the movie or tv episode, or a particular interesting or strong homoerotic content.
This would also help avoid people having to ASK "What is the gay interest or relevancy here?" (which I often have to do in the Comments of a torrent if the Uploader has not explained why something qualifies for being here).

I can understand the reasoning behind that choice, but I would also question it only because so many of those movies from Judy Garland (for example) are so widely and easily found on hundreds of other sites. The Wizard of Oz being a very notable exception for being here, but I don't see any real reason for something like Meet Me In St. Louis to be here.
Some of Doris Day's movies, such as the ones with Rock Hudson, have some very specific gay subtexts or outright gay jokes which would make them fun to be here (there's even some of her movies which were featured in The Celluloid Closet documentary), but other Doris movies like The Man Who Knew Too Much (the Hitchcock film) have no real reason to be here. Again, the ones with Rock Hudson are ones I would agree that they should be here.
-

agreed, so as many other gay interest movie, like I said above there are plenty other torrent sites that provide that kind of stuffs.
but I don't see any real reason for something like Meet Me In St. Louis to be here
I will look this one up, thanks.

Actually, in my experience the only other sites that really carry much of gay interest movies are gay-specific torrent sites. I really don't see much on non-gay specific sites unless it's a mainstream movie.
As far as Judy Garland…I only mention Meet Me In St. Louis (great movie, as are many of her other films) because it just doesn't register on a gay interest level with me (although I love the movie), just as some of her other movies like The Harvey Girls (Angela Lansbury is also in that one), A Child Is Waiting, In The Good Old Summertime, The Pirate, all the movies she made with Mickey Rooney, etc. also similarly don't register as much on a gay level.
Others, like A Star Is Born, Summer Stock, I Could Go On Singing, etc. (other titles escape me for the moment) have a much stronger gay pull because of how some of those more tragically mirror her own life, and part of Judy's gay appeal IS the tragedy surrounding her in her life.
Once again, all the movies with Doris Day and Rock Hudson belong here for various reasons (a couple of those movies do have some gay-specific or strongly gay-suggestive characters).
Just to add: I do think the "culturally competent" comment here was uncalled for and somewhat rude. What this all comes down to is really a matter of individual interpretation, depending on how one looks at it...everything isn't really completely cut-and-dried.
-

If users followed this guidance, it would go a long way to resolving the question "Is this gay-themed or not?" At the very least, it would give the moderators a head-start in making their decision. It's also potentially ambiguous: Someone who's very good at making yoghurt could be considered "culturally competent.
If this were made a rule, it could help to define what's meant by "gay-themed" as opposed to simply "gay-interest." That's not an easy distinction…but, for example, I think Julia Child's old cooking shows are probably of interest to many gays, but I'm not sure I'd call them "gay-themed." Do they belong on this site? I'll let others debate that.
As an aside, perhaps we can use some terminology other than "culturally competent." That term suggests that someone who doesn't meet that description is either uncultured or incompetent (or both), and that's a bit unkind.
-
"Culturally competent" is not an insult. It is a fact, for all of us. I am not Asian, I did not grow up in Asia, I do not pretend to be culturally competent to judge Asian movies, even when I understand some of the language. I am also not culturally competent to judge movies made in Africa, for instance.
"Cultural competence" is a common concept in anthropology and sociology. It is not an insult, it is an admission that we all have limitations, and others have experiences and knowledge that we cannot acquire ourselves.
The discussion on this post is EXACTLY what we want to encourage, for every movie that is in a grey area.
Instead of moderators making their own decision, which has random results, we will discuss the movie in these forums, and many can comment, and we'll get a much more fair, equitable, and consistent decision on whether it's gay enough to stay here. A secret forum that is only viewable by moderators isn't good enough.
If a movie is obviously out of theme, then it can be deleted immediately. If it is questionable, let us all discuss it (that's what "socialize" means – make the decision as a group, rather than as an individual.)
Whatever the decision, the link to the discussion can be reused many times, whenever someone uploads the same film in different formats.
This is the core problem:
There are 2 Mods for Themed and TV, myself and Kalayan, but mostly I'm the one doing Themed torrent moderation because Kalayan have other jobs as moderator. ... sometimes I just don't have time.
That's why we have different mods that came from around the world and from different languages. We may still have small group of people but its enough.
Those two statements cannot both be true. If only one person is judging the Themed Movies category, then there are no people from around the world making these decisions! C'mon folks, let's be rational.
The final decision can be made by a moderator, but only after the users have their say.
And of course this is a democracy! Torrents are alive or dead because people choose to seed them. Torrents are posted because people choose to share them. There is nothing autocratic about this site, except that one moderator has total control over which gray-area postings are kept and deleted. That's why we're getting random results.
How would I rewrite the rules? They are so poorly written that in their present form, they can't be rescued. Remember, this site explicitly forbids posting anything that is interesting to gays. Until someone provides a real OED definition for "gay-interest", we have to assume it means what it says – anything interesting to gays. This is a very strange rule for a site named gaytorrent!
So how about: Themed Movies are only allowed if a majority of GTRU users agree that they are gay enough to belong here. In films where the homosexual content is obscured because of age, code compliance, or authorial intent, the opinion of users who grew up in the culture that produced the film should be given extra weight, because they can detect subtle references to homosexuality that will be missed by users and moderators who are not familiar with that culture.
@2222 – wouldn't your job be a lot easier if you didn't have to make any decisions about Themed Movies, because the users were making them for you, in their own spare time? Wouldn't that save you a lot of work? Wouldn't it be nice to say that every decision you make has the support of the majority of GTRU users?
-
It would be a lot easier if an Uploader…as I already stated and explained...would simply say why a movie qualifies as a Themed Movie.
Then there's also Google (which way too many don't seem to bother using), which I use many times when trying to defend someone who uploads a movie to which others are questioning the "gayness" for validation here, and I post what I find, either as a quote or a link. If people would simply use an easy Google (or other search engine) search, the answer as to whether something belongs here could likely be solved most of the time. People wouldn't have to question the validity of an upload. For crying out loud, I've seen where someone posts a comment actually questioning "what is gay?" about a torrent when it's already been made clear in either the description or screenshots. READ the damn description before commenting, people!
Problem solved (regardless whether others continue to argue and debate the validity). As I also said before, sometimes it can be apples and oranges…one person's opinion rather than a factual proof or validation. So how about: Themed Movies are only allowed if a majority of GTRU users agree that they are gay enough to belong here.
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense, for the simple reason…as I just stated...people can still argue or debate the worthiness of an upload. What I explained above would be simpler and it would remove a lot of drama and (IMHO) pointless discussion here in Forums where none is really needed (sometimes, anyway).
-
Does Call me by your name and moonlight count? I mean for gay themed movies, since that's the entire theme of each of the films.
