Upgrade GT.ru search engine to show all available titles?
-
I have been on this site a long time and did not realize you had to be a power user for certain titles/entire DVD's to even show up on a search.
What I envision is searching for a particular title, seeing it is here, but one must be a power user to get it. (the listing could be appropriately flagged to indicate one must be a power user to download it. Similar to how buttons are inactivated on seed bonus page if you don't have the required number) and then the user would have an incentive to increase their ratio. Thanks for considering this.
(I would have never discovered this if I hadn't uploaded an entire DVD so perhaps others are equally unaware?)
-
If I'm not mistaken any user can upload or download from the DVD-R category, however they must be a Power User in order to search for the content.
-
The users will have to get the torrent. Not seeing the DVD-R torrents in the Browse or Search, makes that very difficult. Basically it can happen, if:
- The torrent was in the wrong category and later moved to DVD-R
- On own uploaded new torrents (listed in the original uploader Profile) and then moved to DVD-R by Staff
This topic is about making the treasure of DVD-R torrents visible to non-Power Users, but blocking their download. I had always doubts if this hiding is intended by the Administrators for some reasons.
If not by the tracker (which would have to distinguish between the OP and others, I've difficulties to imagine the programme), by the site not allowing to get the .torrent file with the "Download" buttons.
-
I agree with Uwe's point, however there is one possible downside to doing so that I can forsee. If users are able to search and find DVD-R torrents, but not being able to download them, this could open a whole new can of worms in helpdesk, chat, etc pertaining to why they're not able to download the DVD-R torrents. It is after all a well known fact that most users do not bother to read a lot of things (such as the rules and/or the forums).
That being said, I'm not sure how difficult the re-scripting of the page would be. If it's something that's in a CSS, as apposed to within the torrent page itself, I'm thinking there would be some technical back-end things that would require a lot of power in order to change. Perhaps mgr can shed some light on as to whether such a modification would be feasable to begin with.

Hi all
In case it may help, in the following link, Mgr explained a bit why he didn't want newbies (though fancydude isn't a newbie anymore) to access the DVD-R section :

:thankyou: tiptoe… That indeed does shed some more light on things

Thx MrMazda, I like it too when Mgr enlightens us with his knowledge
In fact, when I don't see a post of Mgr during a couple of days, I always think about his health, if he's ok etc…
Strange isn't it ?And yes, I like it when I read you daily, when the Forum is alive with questions and Mods answers; each Mod answering in his own style. I hope Uwe won't frown if I compare him to our "German Sherlock Holmes", do you know why ?
Because in his answers, he always gives the maximum of different reasons per problem : when we would have thought about a possibility to solve an issue, Uwe finds 2...or more !
GT is a great site because it has competent (and friendly) Admins and Mods.

mgr is definitely a sharp one. When you're here for a while, you'll get to learn we're all one big happy family.

Well, sorry guys, as usual, I read the link provided by Tiptoe and all the other stuff here on this thread and it mostly doesn't light on my question. I get the part about "greediness" of new members but this doesn't address why all titles can't come up on a search engine. If anyone wants to cite specifically, I'd appreciate it.
So, to my suggestion - I see Mr. Mazda's point - that people might not understand that they can see a title and not be able to download. Do people flood the helpdesk with tickets about seed bonuses? It says right at the topic that if a button is greyed out, you don't have enough bonus points. Unless it is way too much work, I would think a flag above a particular movie "This movie is only available to power users….if you do not have a ratio of 1.01 you cannot access this file" would be crystal clear. Is this too complicated to work into the site?
Ok, or - how about this- put all the titles in a separate section that you must "agree" that you understand searching here will show you the titles, but downloading is only for power users?
This may be all moot - my ratio went from 0.815 to 0.816 and that is with probably about three fourth's of a day or more of only seeding- and I can't seem to figure out to upload an entire DVD file.......
-
If you're trying to upload a DVD-R, you would do it with the VIDEO_TS folder the same way you would a regular torrent. The only stipulation is that eventually, your torrent will get moved to the DVD-R category as you may not be able to upload directly to that category.
-
Make sure you put the VIDEO_TS folder inside a folder with the proper name of the video.
-
And make sure to rip from the DVD the complete VIDEO_TS folder, not only the main movie title files.
-
guys –-- how did we get to ripping DVD's and VTS folders? I asked about upgrading the search engine so all users can see all titles. That's it.

The helpdesk is flooded with all kinds of basic questions that have been repeated answered all over this site.
A separate section where people click saying they read the rules won't make any difference because no one reads the rules and they will just click the button anyway, then complain at us.

Yes, Raphjd - that happens every day at my job. The letters sent out by my office couldn't be more clear and when the people call in, I end up explaining the same thing five times and STILL they argue. However, the education level of these people generally is far lower than the people who frequent this site. Uploading and downloading torrents is far more complicated than most of the people I deal with could do. Heck I can't even upload! And I am reading everything ! But if my idea is more trouble than it is worth, I surely can understand. Thanks for considering it.
-
fancydude: I can guide you through the upload process so that you can figure out how it works. I'm frequently in the chat as well.
As for the education level of some people, never let that stand in the way. I myself was kicked out of highschool part way through my first semester of Grade 11, yet when I was working at Microsoft (they still don't know I never actually graduated), I'd point out things to some of their big wig techie guys with all kinds of papers to say they know what they know and they were pretty well always in awe at what I was able to find for them.
Then again take my father for example. He's been working in automotive for years now as an industrial engineer. Here's the most interesting part… He as well is a highschool dropout. He managed to get his way into such positions the same way I did... Tell things as they are and when a problem presents itself, use simple logic to solve it....
Bottom line is that you can have all the education in the world and still not have an f'ing clue what you're doing... By the same token, you can have no "official" education and know more than the professionals. It's kind of funny how that seems to work out.

oh… I soooo agree...

….

The most sad thing is, that currently we have no human resources available to do modifications on the main site and tracker, even not to re-introduce fixes for things which were already fixed before the February 2010 server issue.
But basically I'd like to have normal users to see these torrents, too, to give them an incitive to strive to become a Power User (needs a share ratio of 1.05, 40 GB of upload and 30 days membership at this moment to get that status).
