Why do veterans are poor ?
-
I know that a veteran is someone who served in the military.
I've seen on the show "What Would You Do" scenarios where they portrait the veteran as poor and if someone would help him.
What is the correlation between serving in the military and being poor?
Do veterans are generally poor? and why? -
Not all vets are poor, especially those who do the full 20 to 30 years.
A lot of the problems stem from mental illness as a result of serving in the military in armed conflict.
Also, many suffer injuries and the VA (Veterans Administration) keeps losing funding, regardless of who the President is. Now it seems that the VA only helps when it's forced to. Even when they have a legal obligation to take of vets, such as my dad who retired after 30 years, they fight so they don't have to. When my dad died, the VA would only give him a military funeral if we paid for it. My aunt found a charity that provided the Honour Guard and such.
Even worse is that the UK didn't have any places for soldiers to recuperate with their families until US talk show host Montel Williams and his charity built Fisher House near Birmingham. Amputees and those with severe injuries recuperate and learn how to live life with their new circumstances.
Montel Williams and his charity built several such places in the US as well.
