I guess I'm one of those rare people that although I don't understand the thrill or point, I'm not one to judge, because I also have my bag of tricks as well.
So all I can say to you, if there is something that disgusts or bothers you, not to pay it any mind and not to be near it, and just respect that particular persons enjoyment.
As I'm sure there are things you like, that you would want to be respected with.

I don't really get it, either. It seems like it would be really painful, and not in a good way.

It could be painful if it's not done correctly. Well so could most anything else we do for kicks.
Otherwise, it really just generates a different sensation. Some enjoy that sensation more than others. Like everything else.
