      This is a pleasant coincidence…
I have mentioned in the past that California has 55 of the 538 electoral votes, and is heavily biased towards democrats.  The electoral process allowed JFK and Jimmy Carter to be elected.

Anyway.. just today, it seems that there is a movement to split California into TWO states.  The democrat controlled coastal counties are EXTREMELY liberal.. so the smaller population of those liberal areas winds up handing 55 electoral votes to the Democrats almost ever election.

By splitting the state in two, the liberal part would be extremely liberal - like Washington DC, but not carry that many electoral votes.  The larger population republican areas would carry MORE electoral votes..  which would hypothetically result in something like this:
Instead of California being 55 electoral votes for the democrats.. it would be about 25 electoral votes for the democrats and 32 for the republicans  (2 more added for the 2 added senators) - resulting in about 7 Republican electoral votes between the two Californias.

To put it simply, if they split California into two states, it will be very rare that a Democrat wins a presidential election.
