WTF is wrong with politics in the USA?

Of all the candidates in the 2016 election, I'm pleased that Trump won. But that is not saying much, because by his own admission, Trump has no experience in politics, and didn't want to be president, and only decided to become a candidate when he saw that the country was severely screwed up and nobody else running for president was capable of fixing anything.
Consider the past elections:
1976 Ford vs Carter
1980 Carter vs Reagan
1984 Reagan vs Mondale
1988 Bush vs Dukakis
1992 Bush vs Clinton
1996 Clinton vs Dole
2000 Bush vs Gore
2004 Bush vs Kerry
2008 Sheik Osama (after defeating Hillary) vs McCain
2012 Sheik Osama vs Romney
2016 The Donald vs Hillary
(I remembered all of the above by memory!)
In that entire list, I would say that the only one's who are incompetent idiots are Ford, Reagan, Bush Sr., Bill Clinton, and The Donald.
Of those, Ford was crippled by the aftermath of Vietnam, aftermath of Watergate, and the energy crisis. Reagan was crippled by that contragate crap, Clinton was crippled by his wife's shenanigans and his Lewinsky affair.
We usually start out with crap to begin with, and even when there is a chance for some improvement, something makes it impossible for that person to get much done. Frankly, Trump is having more success than anybody since Reagan.
