If you're worried about copyright trolls, or about possible legal consequences, I would strongly recommend the use of a VPN service such as PrivateVPN to hide your real IP address and location from being sniffed out.

GTRU has https tracker - that's good. One can also crypt all DNS traffic (google: DNScrypt, OpenNIC).
Trackers do not rely on your IP to balance ratio - so one can try to spoof your IP (in uTorrent) and your MAC too. However VPN/Socket5 can give you stealth security. Bare in mind that companies might harvest meta data for various reasons - usually commercial, not all service providers guarantee FULL anonymity or the terms can be vague.

That sums it up pretty good however I have a small addition.
In the torrent client you're using, there is a peers list - these are the people you're currently in connection or handshake with. It means you're either uploading and downloading to or from these respective IP addresses or host names and they are visible to you unless they're using a VPN (A virtual private network) as mentioned above. The same applies to you from someone else's computer or network in connection with the same torrent.
It's illegal in the USA - like almost anywhere else - to share (uploading) copyrighted material by law. That's copyright infringement or better known as piracy.

If its a commercial product then yes, its illegal. The amateur stuff that is uploaded by an individual is not illegal.

Use uTorrent with https://github.com/DavidMoore/ipfilter
Ipfilter doesn't guarantee security any bit - but it blocks many many many many companies, agencies, etc. that collect p2p information.

Actually ~ ipfilter hasn't been updated for few years (the blocklist).
I was having frustration over some torrents not downloading and when I finally tried turning ipfilter off from utorrent setting - - - KABOOM! Almost all lagging torrents downloaded

My best advice is to use a secure VPN (preferably OpenVPN based) that does not log anything such as PrivateVPN. This will ensure that you're able to mask absolutely ALL of your internet traffic, including DNS lookups and the information of where you're actually connecting to and what you're really doing on the internet. Regardless of what VPN you use, make sure that they support P2P traffic, that they log nothing, and that they have a port forwarding option. PrivateVPN is all of the above, and from my experience, they just work.
