why does it all suck?

You're not looking hard enough. Popular music–that is, music that gets played in heavy rotation on commercial radio, particularly since the rise of Clear Channel (now called iHeartMedia)--has always been mostly complete crap.
And the stuff from decades ago that doesn't suck has been played so much that I can't stand to listen to it anymore. I really enjoy Soft Cell, for instance. But, if you live in the US, the only Soft Cell song you've ever heard on the radio in the last 20 god damn years is "Tainted Love". It's made me hate that song, which is not even a bad song in and of itself. I still always skip it when it starts playing because I'm never in the mood to hear it for the umpteenth time. It takes me out of the "Soft Cell experience" and makes me feel more like I'm sitting through a Nabisco commercial when I hear it (I don't doubt it's been used in one of their ads at some point). They had better original material anyway.
