Are pop groups still relevant?

i grew up in the era of backstreet boys, n sync and all, but i find modern boy and girl bands to be much of the same, anyone feel the same?

I grew up during the late 90's boyband craze too, and I thought they were garbage at the time. These days, I can look back and they actually sound alright. I'm sure there's a big nostalgia factor at play there. That said, there were a lot of boybands back then that I still think are shitty and half-baked today (LFO… I always did and still do fucking hate that "Summer Girls" song).
These days, I am too old for this shit. I don't listen to AM/FM radio or keep up with popular music, so I hardly know anything about today's "boybands", but I'm sure they're crap as anything. Clearly, though, they are still relevant. I still see the One Direction and Justin Beiber posters that little girls and confused boys pick up at Wally World. the same posters that used to feature NSync and Britney Spears. Do I care for/about it? No, but it's obviously still "relevant" outside of my little bubble.

As long as there are tween/teenage girls, there will always be boybands. Girl groups' prevalence depends on the cyclical decade they are in and the "message" they stand for. It's likely difficult for girl groups to stay together these days, because there's always gotta be a "Beyonce" in the group. Even if all the girls are on equal footing and get along well, people instinctively try to pick the one girl who will/should eventually go solo.
One thing is for certain: They will ALL sound the same because they come from the same money machine and they all share 1 or 2 songwriters among the lot.

Do u know that the lead singer of LFO (Rich Cronin) passed away in 2010 due to some sort of leukemia. I was so sad when I came to know about it. May his soul read in peace.
I still to this day love the band E.Y.C they were a kick ass band and I do listen to their songs from time to time.

I wasn't aware about the singer from LFO. That is unfortunate. While I wasn't a fan, I certainly have no ill will for them as human beings. It's always sad when someone dies.

The way I see it, women have always dominated the realm of capital-P "Pop" music, at least as far back as the 60's.

Those groups were geared towards our time. I think that One Direction are geared towards the current generation, and that our era is over.
