Broke My External Hard Drive

so just needed to vent. yesterday i was setting up my new home office. i accidentally knocked my external hard drive off the desk. tried to read the files on it, and no luck.
took it to best buy geek squad. they could not read it either. they sent it out to experts to be looked at. 2-10 weeks to get back, and no guarantee that any of the files will be recovered. and could cost up to $1600 to get it fixed.
5 years and almost 5TB of video files potentially lost cause i accidentally knocked the hard drive to a carpeted floor. makes me sad.
unfortunately, no seeding from me for a while until i find out what is going on with the hard drive. i'll keep you posted on updates as i get the from the geek squad. keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out.

Sorry to hear your woes but my advice is never give up until you are absolutely certain.

OMG! I feel you buddy. This happened to me three times and the lat was two summers ago. I wanted to move some stuff from one hard drive to another, so I put them on this desk and when I got up to get something. The hard drive fell. I was so pissed and depressed about it. I still have it for one day hoping it will kick on for me and God willing I can transfer everything off of it to my other one. You are definitely not alone. The most depressing thing about it is I had pictures on there of my cat when she was a kitten that I never got a chance to back up. Hang in there and like cannonmc said, at least you have a project to keep you busy. Sending positive vibes your way and and good luck.

u download alot, is disk work in RAID mode or just solo disk?
In my opinion，in the solo disk mode u can try to recover it manually， first create a raw cluster copy of the disk, and use virtual drive to load the disk, use other recover software to recover as musch as possible. dont recover the disk directly, bcos the magnetic reader might have chance deflection. make a raw copy of the disk will just do a protected disk scan. if the magnetic reader is broken, the scan can be canceled to avoid the suface of disk be scratched.sorry for my poor English, I try to describe it clear, hope that can help u.
I always check my Disk heathy status in a schedule. since I use RAID5 to store the data, so the reliability proved, I never lost data for 10 years, now I have a Storage Tower with 20 pic of Disk.

Basically - always back up to 2 separate external hard drives and if one dies just replace it with a new one because it's usually way cheaper than fixing it. But keep 2 copies of everything.
No one knows the corrosive potentials of digital files and storage mediums. The trick is to keep duplicates of files and adapt with the times.
It's likely in decades to come that file sizes and storage mediums will shrink drastically and all our current films, music and eBooks will become and obsolete medium. However they will still need to be preserved during our life times.
