Hotel Transylvania 3
This one is easy to grade. C+
There are virtually no surprises but no real flaws. It's an enjoyable enough excuse to get out of the heat. Adam Sandler isn't bad and Adam Samberg isn't grating - which is tremendous improvements over much of their material.
What gives it the plus is the Gremlin Air sequence. (Though when I travelled with them in 1986 they were still using their old name of Aeroflot). It's a burst of inspired lunacy that makes sense.

Mamma Mia: Here we go Again. 10/10. Loved the movie, the cast, the songs, everything.
-
I had a really high expectation about the movie because the cast packed with powerful leading and supporting Oscar winners. But, I guess its just the story, too easy. They need to make another movie with more complex situation, they already have badass casts. Gave it 6/10

Crazy Rich Asians.
So not my style of movie: a heterosexual love story against "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."
It's definitely well-made and well-acted. Like many love stories, Call Me by Your Name for example, the costumes and settings were beautiful.
For people who like this type of movie I'd give it a 8/10.

Hot Summer Nights (2017) and Postcards from London (2018)
This is the case wherein good acting saves a rather average story. Both Timothee Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name) and Harris Dickinson (Beach Rats) shows amazing acting in a rather average plot.
Both Film Story 5/10, Acting wise 7.5/10

1. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Could've been better, or maybe I just don't really like Star Wars. Gave it 6/102. I also just finished Sharp Objects (2018- ) Season 1. Its a good series, I would like to see the next season and I bet that Amy Adams will get nomination for Leading Actress in Drama fro Emmy next year. 8/10
3. American Crime Story (2016- )
ACS is awesome in the first season with O.J. Simpson, Sarah Poulson is great. So, I'm curious about Gianni Versace, most for Ricky Martin. He had a short appearance but deserved the Emmy nomination. The season 2 is great. Full of gayness and blood. Darren Chris was great too. I thought he's gay, turn out that actually he's straight. -
House with a Clock in its Walls
This would have been excellent if I were between the ages of 10-15. I'm not the intended audience.
As an adult, it's an enjoyable popcorn movie that was worth the $5 and two hours I spent on it. Cate Blanchette was very good. Jack Black was Jack Black. The little boy - ask me about him when he's about 10-15 years older.

(Echoes…)
Bad Times in the El Royale.Another movie which is outside my main interests.
The acting is quite good. The movie looks wonderful from the set to the costumes to the cinematography. The period music (end of the 60s) is well done. This was a good role for Jeff Bridges and a star making role for Cynthia Envo. I want to see more of Lewis Pullman as well. My favorite scene involved Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Envo, and Lewis Pullman.
As to Dakota Johnson and Jon Hamm, well, they were also in the movie. I'll reserve judgement concerning Chris Hemsworth - he portrayed a character without any depth so he might have the ability to show depth in another role. He was just superficial with prominently exposed (wrong to the period) vanity muscles.
It's a good sign when I don't notice how long the movie is while watching it. It's long to the point of being bloated.
If you think "Quentin Tarentino-esque" is a compliment, this is a movie for you. It's big on style and self-conscious violence. If you'd prefer Agatha Christie you may give this a skip.

A Star Is Born
A great movie. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were great in it. The story is simple but the music was fantastic. The pacing of the movie could be better. Some scenes were too short and others were too long. Overall, I would give it a 8.5/10.
It's also nice to see Shangela and Willam from Drag Race in the movie.

Halloween 2018
I liked the movie overall. I was not a big fan that they decided to cut the timeline and only focus on it being a sequel to the original movie. Even so, Jamie Lee Curtis did a great job as Laurie, but I think she should have been given a bigger focus in the movie. Some of the deaths were very unimportant, but I liked the last part of the movie. I would give it 8/10.

I love this movie.
Story about a man with double life probably not new but this one is beautifully made. Maybe because I like to cook to bake, its kinda personal.
Added this to my favorite.
7/10

Into the Spiderverse:
A nerdfest that is accessible to the regular public.
Basic plot - a group of alternate universe Spidermans (Spider People?) have to work together to save themselves and their multiple universes from disaster.
This looks wonderful with multiple styles of animation juxtaposed against one another. Since these involve non-mainstream characters the film can have surprises and character development (one of my beefs with most superhero tv is that characters are locked in to their images). A couple of the reveals were delightful. The characters have more nuance and depth than people expect from something like Ironman 7 - Tony is still an *Hole but suffers no consequences since he's a wealthy white man.
This was the final movie for Stan Lee who has a significant scene rather than a background cameo.
For ranking? It has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. I'm not the only person who liked it.

Aquaman - some good cgi, some not so good cgi and no fucking history (but Mera is really hot)

My New Years resolution last year was to try to see 24 movies in the theatre throughout the year. I managed 20.
Last movie I watched in the theatre was Wreck-it Ralph II. I wish I'd seen this movie BEFORE I saw Into the Spiderverse.
Wreck-it Ralph, the total is less than the sum of its parts. The different plots and character lines feel like they belong to different movies - and reading the history of making the movie makes it sound like they were intended to be different movies. Part 1 had Ralph, Vannelope, and Fellix start from different situations but end up together. Part 2 had Ralph and Vannelope head in different directions.
The parts that worked, the Princesses were brilliant. Likely there will be a Princess movie in the future. The characters in Vannelope's plot worked a bit better than some of the characters in Ralph's plot. Felix had a plot that was almost completely offscreen but the bits of it that we saw were good.
The big thing that failed, Ralph was not the most important character in his own movie. What happened with Zootopia when they realized that the main character had a less interesting story than his sidekick was change the movie to focus on the sidekick. This was Vannelope's story not Ralph's and it suffered by giving Ralph more screentime then his character development deserved.

Life of the Party - 8/10 - It was funny. Could have been even better if it did not go the typical makeover route.

So, I've seen two films in the theatre in January:
Escape Room - suspense horror. Non-gory
A group of strangers participate in a game that quickly reveals itself as deadly.
It reminded me of a less trippy or self-aware version of The Cabin in the Woods. The Kid Who Would be King - modern fantasy. Young Adult.
The world we're living in is falling to darkness due to a lack of moral leadership. A twelve year old boy draws Excaliber from a stone and sets about to make allies of his peers to fight against the rot in the world.
A nice movie for the end of January where I need something light and optimistic to deal with the cold and dark of a Canadian winter. Each of the movies left me whelmed. Nothing about them was bad and nothing about them was great. They were entertaining diversions with largely unknown casts many of whom I'd like to see in more challenging movies or tv shows.

I've seen lots movies lately. Among them were:
Blue Velvet (1986) - I'd rate it a 8/10 - this movie is fucking sick, but definitely entertaining.
Misery (1991) - 10/10 - As weird as Stephen King can be with his books, I still enjoy them. So the movies are often well-done.
How To Train Your Dragon Part 2 - 9/10 Because the 3rd movie is going to come out soon, I watched the second one. I know, it's a children movie, but I still like it.
Bad Education - 10/10 - It's Gael Garcia Bernal. I'd probably rate most movies with him this highAnd many more this month, which I won't go into details anymore.

A movie that's equally devoted to delivering slow-burn, retro horror; a talented group of character actors; and all-around quirkiness:
Berberian Sound Studio (2012)
"A sound engineer's work for an Italian horror studio becomes a terrifying case of life imitating art."
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1833844/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1
A 7.5/10 for a general score, higher for those who enjoy their films a bit artsy, non-linear and firmly off the beaten path.

glass and ai give it a 7

Someone I (used to) trust recommended Detective Pikachu for non-fans.
OK, so not awful like Pixels or Sausage Party and not as aggressively mediocre as "Secret Life of Pets". The world is more fleshed out than any of the Pokemon cartoons. - which is a very low bar. The main character was a decent actor who rose above the rest of the movie. Bill Nighy phoned in his performance - I'm much more techy with good actors who aren't trying than with bad actors. Ryan Reynolds did good voice acting.
The biggest problem is that virtually anything in the plot played it too safe. The characters were too detached from one another. Big character reveals didn't land since the characters were too flat. Telling us that a character is lonely or that another is obsessed with work or that another is driven by a desire for self-improvement isn't sufficient.
