I too love classical music. I sing in a large symphonic choir and it's the most amazing feeling in the world being part of something so huge. But I also love the intimacy of chamber music. I am learning to play the clarinet and my ambition is to one day be able to play stuff like the Mozart or Brahms quintets or the Saint-Saens sonata.
-
I'm impressed, idomeneo (now where have I heard that before )
Choral singing is good, sadly I didn't make it past my school choir. Good luck with your playing
-
Thanks cannonmc, I've still got a long way to go till I reach my goals.
I love that youtube has become the site it has with incredible performances by the greats as well as some amazing "amateurs" as well as a place to find rarities like the one you posted. Have you come across the channel called Unsungmasterworks which is also about rarely played or unknown works by composers who are not famous today.
-
No, I hadn't come across that channel bbut I have now. Looks like some interesting stuff there. I shall be downloading some of those. Thanks for the tip.
And you know what the cab driver said when he was asked how to get to Carnegie Hall, 'Practice, practice'
PS Have you tried any Zdenek Fibich Symphonies - they are good. Right now I'm listening to Richard Wetz who I've never heard of
-
I hadn't heard any of his symphonies but I had heard/played one of his miniatures. Also while I like finding obscure and neglected works I have to say I love to listen to the famous masterworks as well. My phone has Mahler 3 and 5 on it at the moment as well as Shostakovich Piano Concerto no. 2 and Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 6. Also some Beethoven Piano sonatas and the Missa Solemnis. That's it music-wise most of the other stuff on my phone is spoken word. Also I haven't been on GayHeaven in ages but they had a pretty good classical music sticky in one of the forums there if you wanted to sign up to check it out.

I love Brahms chamber music. (Much different from chamber pot music ). The piano quintet is also very great, but anything Brahms wrote involving clarinet is delicious. Saint Saens best work is also his chamber stuff. I love Faure's contribution in the field also. I guess Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert are taken for granted ;). Also admire Schumann's trios, quartets and the quintet. Rachmaninov wrote some fine chamber works which probably don't get the recognition they are due.
