Confused why your name appears in the IRC Gateway?
-
I was surprised when I saw my username several times appearing in the Chat window from the IRC Gateway ( even that I wasn't participating, neither that I was using IRC itself and therefore visible as a present chatter ) and some other users seem to be confused as well. Asking "why this happened" didn't get me any answers and so I decided to investigate in that issue a bit:
It seems, that the IRC Gateway has an option to convert the word "username" or "user" into the command "$username" or "$user", which seems to replace the used word into your actual account name here at GTru. This sort of coding might be very usefull, if a chatter wants a sentence being adressed personally to all chatters, without typing all the names separately, but due to the fact, that most GTru users don't know, that the IRC Gateway is coded this way, it's rather confusing reading your own name in the chat window. On the other hand, it might be an attempt to animate "just reading" users to participate in the chat, because a sentence like "How are you username ?" could indeed force a viewer to answer to that question. I'm not a friend of such animations and the regulary found questions from users ( "Did we meet ?" "Do I know you ?" or just "Why does my name appears here ?" ) confirmes my dislike - especially when no one is answering to that issue or to the questions, the users were asking. The informed users about this coding issue seem to have a lot of fun - but did you ever thought of the users, who have no clue about it?
