Have donated, but…
-
To Admins & Whom It May Concern,
I think gaytorrents.ru is great, and I don't mind kicking in some money now and then so I can just download what I want – I donated 10 Euros a couple months ago. I seed, but not alot of people are interested in what I have. Now my ratio is bad, and I wouldn't mind paying again.
Here's the thing -- now that I want to pay a second time, GB are actually more expensive. Sure, the the upload credits are the same price on the donate screen. But my ratio has changed. (http://forum.gaytorrent.ru/index.php?topic=3598.msg11121) Since I have downloaded more, paying a second time will credit the same amount of GB uploaded but actually let me download less.
It's not my place to tell the admins how to run the site, but this makes donating again a little distasteful. It also makes no sense from a business point of view. You wouldn't credit donations 5 Euros = 2 GB, 10 euros = 3.5 GB, 20 Euros = 6 GB. Who would buy more?
Yet because of the ratios, this is the situation for people donating again and again. At the start my ratio was 0.2, and 10 Euros (5GB) bought 25GB of download. Now my ratio is .35 and that same 5 GB will only buy about 15 GB. If I stick with it and my ratio gets to 0.8 then it will only buy 6 GB. I just want to support the site in exchange for the convenience of downloading what I want, but as I spend more time and money on the site, downloading will become more and more expensive.
People who paid before are more likely to pay again. It should be cheaper and cheaper if we buy more -- just like if we buy at one time. Or maybe there's a technical reason this can't be done, or maybe the admins and other users think donating users should pay more and more just like non-donating users have to upload more and more. (And like I said, I do upload but don't get alot of bites.)
Just a suggestion, but what if after donating the ration reset to some modest number for 30 or 60 days -- maybe 0.3?
Love the site, and I will try to seed more regardless. (An upload credit for the suggestion would be nice, wheter or not its taken )

Here is my observations.
1. You are not seeding now.
2. Donations are not required ever but always appreciated.
3. AFTER you low ratio warning started you snatched over 20 TORRENTS! Why keep leeching when you know you are in ratio trouble? My recommendation.
Upload a fresh torrent. If you do it with no mod intervention not only will you get the seeded traffic but I will also award you 50-100sbp from my first time uploader program. http://forum.gaytorrent.ru/index.php?topic=8444.0
Good Luck!

As a first thing let me say thank you for your donation
You might see it correct that a donation will not correct your ratio directly - but there is one logical error in your calculation: You did not take in account the traffic for your downloads (and what you get for that traffic) in your calculation
Your ratio is depends on two figures, your upload traffic and your download traffic - (mathematically: Ratio = UL / DL).
a donation gives you upload traffic - the other figure (your download traffic) is only changed by your downloaded traffic (and your desire to download more videos). So I can't see that donation is more expensive the more you downloaded - did you not get something else for your downloads (like videos you like?)We never said (or promised) that a donation will increase your ratio directly. In the opposite: we invested a lot of thinking, discussions and work to implement our sliding ratio scale and the new designed donation page too where the effects of a donation can be seen directly before you really donate.
Just think if we promised a direct ratio correction - if that is fair??? I think NOT.
I can't change the mathematical rules about big numbers: 2 GB for 5 EUR seems quite a lot if you have a download traffic of 4 GB (it's half of your download traffic) and will raise a (theoretical ratio of 0.000) from 0.000 to 0.500. Now imagine the same case with (also just a theoretical construction) when the user has already downloaded 2 TB - a ratio raise from 0.000 to 0.500 in this case will require an upload traffic of 2 TB (2048 GB) also for 5 EUR ???
I can't see that as fair, not towards site owner (who has to pay the server and traffic costs) and especially not towards our users who fight with their ratio
I can only recommend to read the donation page thoroughly, you can always play around with the donation amounts and see what influence a donation of a certain amount has on your ratio (before you click on the button "donate <amount>now at our partner site"). Don't forget: if you are below your minimum ratio there is an extra button (below 250 EUR) for a needed donation to reach your minimum ratio - so please don't say we did not try to help our users.
Now some other remarks to your posting:
-
The link you gave to the rationator 2.1 thread is long since outdated (posted on: May 01, 2008, 04:27:22 am), my answer to that initial postings will send you to the correct thread (http://forum.gaytorrent.ru/index.php?topic=6191.0)

Did you ever consider to upload a new video to our tracker? Not only will that give you some upload traffic (without download traffic), even more: since our members can say thank you and can award seed bonus points to your upload that is a really good method to gain [desc=Seed Bonus Pints]SBP[/desc] which you also can exchange into upload traffic!
-
Did you ever consider to spend some more time in the forum and take part in some forum games (where you can also win SBP or join the uploader programs which some of our moderators established? Again you can get some SBP in those programs.
-
Did you ever consider to take part in some extra contest on our site (the last one - holiday recipes - is still announced on our home page). Also there you could win upload traffic as prizes.
BTW: how come that most of our members manage to keep a ratio above their minimum ratio without ever having donated? Our old (and often posted) first aid for ratio problems comes to mind: seed, seed, seed.
Edit: did you understand that our site is about sharing, not about buying? You don't "buy" download traffic but we expect from you that you share what you got for free (!). At your start we don't set strong limits for your minimum ratio - but after some time (depending on your download traffic) we except that you understand the (might be outdated) concept of sharing.</amount>

mortonlyn, what I do is make sure I am always running my torrent program in the background whenever the computer is on. I leave 1-3 Gaytorrent low seed torrent running to help keep those torrent alive and get Seed Bonus Point.
I answer seed request as much as I can.
I re-up a popular corrupt torrent. You can find them by searching in Torrent Name for "contact staff". This can be a lengthly process. Lots of waiting around for a staff member to delete the old torrent and approve your new one. The reward is lots of upload traffic. You can reduce the waiting time a little by going into the chat room and ask nicely/politely one of the staff who is available at the time for help.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies and for taking my comments seriously. Maybe in my initial post I wasn't clear how frustrated I got that my uploads were trickling out – at the rates I was getting, I would have to leave my computer on for weeks to get enough U/L credit to download one movie. I can be lazy and forget to leave it running at night, but today for example I took it to work. And I use a VPN to get around internet censorship where i live, which has an undetermined effect on speed when I'm trying to do two things at once (it's slow regardless). Excuses, I know, but still.
@cumeaternc About grabbing 20 torrents, yeah, I said 'fuck it' when my ratio went into the red and tried to grab everything I wanted before my warning expired, to figure out later how to get myself out of the hole or decide not to. Also, the feeling of urgency led me to snatch more than I wanted or needed even. This does not make me a model citizen, I know. I was frustrated.
@mgr I see the point that the ratio couldn't be reset, for the reasons you describe. And thanks for the post for the updated ratio info, though I don't think it changes my point. I guess my approach -- to state it, not to argue it -- would be that donations have the effect of minuses from the downloaded total -- 10 euros for 5 GB minused, etc. However, you say you do it your way for a reason and I respect that.
And point taken about the site being about sharing, not buying. And I really appreciate that explanation -- it is a nice explanation that there are the rules and that donating will cut in some credit but won't alter the same rules that apply to everyone.
I will look into uploading a new video, but I don't have an idea of where to get a fresh one or what would be popular. I read "Suggestions to Newbies: Getting off on the right foot" but it struck me as odd--download something that lots of other people are downloading, so other people will download it, just to get the upload credit? Don't get me wrong, I understand the logic, from the users and the site point of view. It just seemed like alot of gamesmanship as well as a high-maintenance strategy to execute.
So I donated the first time, and I just figured I would continue donate and download stuff I like (and seed the stuff I like as I download) and support the site that way. I'm not rich, and I could just as easily pay for a porn site -- but this was the first site i typed in my card number for, because i liked the overall philosophy.
Thanks for the suggestions, I want to stay with the site, and will thank about what to do next.

just a suggestion, id like to see the ratio meet up with the Ratio of what is uploaded in programs like Utorrent, or bitorrent software, because i have noticed slight differences between what the website says, an what my utorrent says, so it gives a more accurate reading between both the website ratio & software we are using for download, as i too have noticed similar problems, an i know im no professional website operator, let alone software programmer, i dont even know if many others have experience the same problem, because it reminds me of giving a fortune teller money just for a false fortune.
Thanks for any help, an will look forward to any updates in this area. -
You can not compare the data of µTorrent with our website shown tracker statistics.
µTorrent cumulates all a torrent's up- and downloads since you ever added a torrent, while our tracker database keeps only the information since the last start of the torrent (not previous). Only your total account figure is the sum of all since ever. IMHO this is due to limit the size of database and the server load.
Then you need to understand that our tracker relies on the reports of your µTorrent (made all 30 minutes, displayed with a little delay on the site). So between the updates even on first time started torrents, the µTorrent numbers are higher.
Sometimes reports don't reach our tracker and this can have a bunch of reasons …

In the following link, Uwe and Amice both participated to the discussion : why are GT stats session based ?
