Are Canadians getting ready for a trip to the polls (national election)?
-
Well, last night as I was watching TV, trying to fall asleep, I saw an ad for Stephen Harper and his conservatives. In the ad it was going over everything that Mr. Harper and the federal conservative party (supposedly) accomplished since they came to power. Its kinda funny since Mr. hasn't really been able to show his true colours(or leadership style) since Canada has had a minority gov't (meaning if all the opposition parties agreeded they could bring down the gov't and force an election) Mr. Harper has been Prime Minister since February 6, 2006, with his 1st Minority gov't, Mr. Harper then caused an election and was given a larger Minority Gov't by Canadians in October 2008. Canada requires an election every 5 years, however Mr. Harper passed legislation between the 2006 and 2008 elections, to change the timings of elections to every 4 years with fixed election dates, which he violated when caused the Election in 2008. Mr. Harper has been an effective manager of the country, but there really isn't anything that stands out (in my mind), to show his leadership skills. So Canada doesn't need an election legally until 2013, or 2012 if Mr. Harper decides to go by his own election law, which he choose not to follow.

:afr: Very Confusing!!

Minority Government - usually defined by a small ruling party who is clearly outnumbered by the other parties. The opposition parties can legally ask for the dissolution of the current government.
Feb 6, 2006 - Mr Harper becomes Prime Minister.
October 2008 - Mr. Harper asks the Governor General to call for an election. Normally, elections can only be called by the Gov General if the rest of the opposition parties call for a vote of no confidence in the government. He wins, but only 20% of the Canadians actually voted during this election.Sometime between 2006 and 2008 - the following happened:
Normal time between elections - 5 years
Mr Harper asks for change of the law to have an election every 4 years instead.Paul is saying that:
A) Mr. Harper's not that remarkable
B) He could choose to have an election n 2012 or on 2013. -

Hey, it took me over half an hour to finish rewriting it hehehe

:zing: :blondmom:
Your not the first person that has had one of those while communicating with me, :lolp: and I did write alot and bounced around different ideas.
NQM - good job condensing that mess. WAY TO GO
but only 20% of the Canadians actually voted during this election.
***** I know Canada had a problem with voter fatigue especially in Ontario (Federal election 2004, Federal election 2006, Municipal election 2006, Provincal election 2007 and another Federal election 2008) About 59% of Eligible Canadians voted in 2008 (13,834,294) so divide by .59 to get total number of eligible voters (23,447,956). About 22% of total Eligible Canadians voted for Mr. Harper (5,206,796)Sometime between 2006 and 2008 - the following happened:
Normal time between elections - 5 years
*****In Canada, the governing party has considerable flexibility to determine the date of an election anywhere up to five years of being elected, Added bonus for winning with a Majority gov't and what a better time to call an election than shortly after the 2nd place party has a scandal breakMr Harper asks for change of the law to have an elections every 4 years instead.
***** with Fixed dates, instead of what it was
just adding some extra info back in. Hopefully confusion is all gone

Voter Fatigue, add in another municpal election in 2010, I don't want an unnesscary election, Provincal election scheduled for Fall 2011 already.
but I saw more ads on tv yesterday, so Mr. Harper is cage rattling(minor attack ads) at the moment, and the federal budget still has to be passed in the House of Commons.
Me thinks I'm screwed. Here we go again

maybe people don't care who sits on top, because it is temporary anyway?
