Is Final Fantasy XV any good?
-
I keep seeing it on discount and have learnt there is some Royal edition (Base game with all DLC) a friend recommended it to me as its more of a hack and slash than the turn based (I don't like turn games) like Devil May Cry, but I've looked at reviews and they all scream it's great but would rather know from someone that has played it…
Only FF game I played was I think X but never finished as the turn based dynamic drove me to distraction, do you need to have played the others to understand the character/plot.

No, you don't need to play any other FF games since each FF game stands on its own. They are separate stories/worlds/characters etc.
I just "finished" playing FF XV and I think its a good game. The first like 60% of the game is free world. You get to choose what quests to do or to do sidequests etc. The last 30% is pretty much linear storyline and you are forced to pretty much complete the game.
The game has a lot of replay value after you finish the storyline. There are end game dungeons and other quests you can only do after you beat the storyline.
I think if you don't like FF X's turn based system, you might like FFXV since its more hack and slash style.
The storyline itself is kinda meh. If you want to get more out of the story, you need watch the film and other media to get the full story. They are also making more DLC this year.

You don't need prior knowledge of the franchise to enjoy the game. Just give it a go: SquareEnix is a good company that knows what it's doing.

Gladiolus FTW. And yes it's more of a Hack'n Slash than a classic turn based FF game.

The combat takes a little getting used to, but it's a great story all around. I think there's a demo on console (if that's where you are) if you're skeptical. Plus the four guys give off such a homoerotic vibe the entire time, if you're into that.

If you're newer to Final fantasy games, it's a good game. It's definitely an above average RPG. As a final fantasy fan? It's possibly my least favorite in the series. I'm not sure how it fairs with the DLC and the updated story patches they added, but when I played through you could tell they rushed parts of the story, the combat was clunky, and there was very little that drew me in. If I'd played it with no knowledge of other Final fantasies, if it was its own thing, it probably would have been a bit better.

If you're new in FF series, or any JRPG in general, just buy it. The gameplay is pretty nice.
Although, after finishing NieR: Automata, FF XV feels so bland. It's not that i regret buying it.. It doesn't have enough "emotion" at the start to keep me playing.
If you love hack and slash, get NieR: Automata instead. Cool movesets, intriguing story, and awesome music

FFXV is one of my more favorite games. The story needed a bit of tweaking I thought. Or rather, how they portrayed some things within the game. There were a few points where you found out something happened offscreen, and you wanted to know how it came about. It would explain some character motivations better. But still, it was a nice story, the graphics and world were excellent, the voice acting was great, the combat was fun, and it was just a really great game.
I played a lot of games, but I never enjoyed a group of characters more than I did those four guys. They really felt like four good friends. The decision to have the team already existing and the same throughout the game (with a couple of minor diversions) was a good one. It made you much more emotionally invested in them.

I never was able to really get into the story but I loved the moments between your party of four and how they interact

I had this game on my PC for well over 2 months and still haven't tried playing it. It takes around 100GB of your harddrive space and according to google the hours it takes to complete the main quest only is 20+ hours.

I agree with most said. I had never played any other FF games, but my boyfriend has and is a big fan of the series. Once you get use to the fighting style, it's a lot of fun.

I played it but i don`t like the battle system and that you have to sleep to level up! The day and night thing, i hate it. Why are the monsters so strong at night and you have tot sleep and cant finish you quests…
I wait for the FF7 remake
