What and Why? United States midterm election

It has come to my knowledge that there are midterm elections in 2018.
What is the purpose of this election? I dare to ask: is it a presidential election of sorts? (I know that a president is elected every 4 years)
and why is this election so important to the Republican party (Trump keeps saying that it's important that "they win") -
The whole of the House of Representatives is elected every 2 years and 1/3rd of the Senate (6-year terms) is elected every 2 years.

State and local elections are also held this day. The blue wave is also going to be happening on that level.

While this is true, it has nothing to do with federal election laws, but rather convenience and cost.
