(Reuters) - Two men were stabbed to death in the U.S. city of Portland on Friday when they tried to stop their attacker from harassing two women because they appeared to be Muslim, police said.

The incident unfolded on a commuter train hours before the start of Ramadan, Islam’s holy month, when most of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims observe a religious fast.

The attack began shortly before 4:30 p.m. when a man started yelling ethnic and religious slurs toward two women who appeared to be Muslim on a MAX train at the Hollywood Transit Station, the Portland Police Department said in a statement.

Three men who intervened were stabbed, two fatally. The attacker was arrested shortly after he got off the train, police said, adding that the women left the scene before police could interview them.

UPDATE, 8:20 pm: At a press conference, Portland Police Bureau spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson confirmed eyewitness reports that the man was verbally abusing two women, one in a hijab.

Simpson said that screed was part of a larger, unfocused rant and erratic behavior.

"It's horrific," Simpson said. "There's no other way to describe it."

UPDATE, 8:45 pm: The Portland Police Bureau has issued an official statement on the double slaying. It says the man who committed the attacks was "yelling various remarks that would best be characterized as hate speech toward a variety of ethnicities and religions."

It also says police are still looking for the two young women, who may have been targets of the verbal abuse…

The The Council on American-Islamic Relations, based in Washington, D.C., tonight decried the killings and asked President Donald Trump "to speak out personally against rising bigotry and acts of racial violence in America targeting Muslims and other minority groups."

This is the America that Republicans want to live in.  They proved it the other night in Montana.

HAHAH! Sharia law, you mean the GOPs wet dream?

Ah, so you love sharia because it's not Republican.

That explains everything about the left.  They only hate something if it's deemed "republican".

FTR: The killer was a far-left "progressive"! He was a Bernie-bro turned Jill Stein voter. Quit trying to blame this on the GOP or conservatives.

Love? Are you f*cking crazy? The left is literally as far away from Sharia as you can get, we hate everything it stands for and does.

How can't you see it? That the right mirrors Sharia law? Gay rights, women's rights…
The left fights the right on all these issues - that the right stands with those who follow Sharia on.

Anything to distract from the fact that he was a Nazi that feels the same way about race as the right does, huh?

He wanted a Sanders/ Stein ticket, so he's clearly been unhinged for a while if he thought that ever happened.

Above being a "bernie bro" He's a fucking Nazi  (I'd just say white supremacist, but he does the salute and all) / murderous terrorist.

Well, let's talk about young white girls and your beloved muslims.

The UK's liberal government, police and media covered up a muslim rape gang for a decade.  They were able to rape over 1,400 young white girls.

This is what liberals think of "women's rights" when it conflicts with the interests of muslims.

How is the statement of fact, to clarify the misinformation and mis-allusions that had been hurled an attempt to distract? It was an act of clarification.

The truth is this man was crazy, but I thought by stating that he supported Sanders then Stein made that clear. When he caused a disruption at a prior pro-Trump rally the organizers reported him to police who promptly did nothing.
