It is necessary when the person you are with indicates they want it. Some people even have a "do it in public" fetish.
Just consider your town, and don't do any PDA someplace that would kill you for holding hands with another man. Some places are OK no matter what you do, short of actual orgasms.

I just don't see any reason for it. I don't want to see any PDA whether you are gay or straight.
