The far-fetched idea of California seceding from the nation took a tiny step forward this week. California's secretary of state agreed to allow a group called Yes California to begin collecting signatures for a ballot measure, reports the Los Angeles Times. If 585,407 are collected by July 25 — a high hurdle for the relatively small group — a proposal will land on the 2018 ballot to erase lines in the state Constitution outlining California as "an inseparable part of the United States" and the US Constitution as the "supreme law of the land." If passed, it would set up a 2019 vote on whether California should become "a free, sovereign and independent country." Even if that passed, huge hurdles remain. Secession would require a constitutional amendment, with two-thirds support in both the US House and Senate and ratification by at least 38 states.
"It's basically impossible," notes a post at New York magazine. The idea of a "Calexit" has been in the works since 2014, but the Wall Street Journal notes that it got a boost after Donald Trump's election as a mostly jokey way to register opposition. Seems nuts? "I think we'd have the votes today," says a group co-founder, who argues that California gives the federal government more money than it receives and is "culturally" separate from the rest of the country. "America already hates California, and America votes on emotions." Adds a rep for the California National Party, which supports secession in the long-term but not the current effort, "It's certainly as likely as Donald Trump becoming president." (The movement already has a Moscow "embassy".)

It's unlikely this will happen but everything that has happened in the past year has been pretty far fetched. I do have a feeling if this gets any traction other states may want to join in.

It can't happen though I think now that the voters should think about the next few elections and vote for the indepent party person. The Two party system that we currently work under isn't working.
So much emphasis is being placed ont eh office of the president yet the congress and the house have screwed us for years and no one seems to care.

I don't know how it can be done. Donald Trump put on a baseball cap and suddenly this entire group of uneducated white people could no longer tell the difference between a reality show and real life. They sill think they made a good decision. It's only day 13 and he already has the UK, Germany, Canada and Australia pissed off at us.
The man just went on TV and told America to pray for The Celebrity Apprentice. Nothing about this is normal. The two parties have too much power to allow a third one in.
The West Coast states and NY/New England should just join Canada and let the red states destroy themselves. I will even put on a mounty hat and eat at Tim Hortons.

What does California has to offer Canada, or any other country? California has nothing but service industry, it cannot supply its own food, it has no industrial sector. And all the so called services and tourism that supposedly make it give more to the Federation than other states wil come to a halt and maybe move out once it separates.
American liberals are just useful to fuck the brains out of them (if they have any left, that is)

I don't think any other country would want them. It's too risky.
They claim to be the 6th largest economy in the world. Some people dispute that number but they still have a huge economy. It's bigger than most countries.

California is 1 of the few states to do alright on its own actually. It CAN provide it's own food, and it's like a #8 economy or something in the world even though it's just a state! It's basically a mini-country, and they contribute to the US way more in funding then they get back. If Calexit were to happen, both the US and California would be hurt, but California is 1 of the few states who'd do alright and not be completely devastated by leaving.
That being said, it's not in California's interest to leave the US (plus it won't happen, because all the states have to agree or something; states like New York won't want to be left alone to deal with this shitfest). Even if California leaves, that just leaves the political opposition with more power, and they'd still be neighbors with an undesirable country affecting them. California is better off being a thorn in the side of Trump administration, and trying to influence the country in a more positive direction rather than isolating itself the way Trump wants to do with our country and the world.
Not positive but I think I read that the person who started Calexit was a Republican (well before all this happened), so it kind of indicates whose interests would be better served by California leaving the USA.
Now if California were to leave with other liberal states, that might be interesting, but I just don't see that happening unless some other things start happening. In these crazy times though, who knows?

California agriculture generates roughly $37.5 billion annually, more than any other state (and this article was written well before this election season, so it wasn't created just to support a Calexit argument or anything)

I think if California did want to leave some other blue states would have to go with them. Lots of people in New England, Oregon and Washington state would simply move to California before this happens. It would destroy those states. Their only choice would be to become part of California.

But that is due to trade agreements, which California would need to make on its own, with little leverage power, if it is forced to exist as an independent nation.
And also consider the geopolitical consequences of splitting off of a economic (and nuclear) power: USA is a giant that the other countries are dying for to feed (the other one is China, of course). No government in their right mind would accept a split state from USA without fearing commercial (and in the very worst case scenario, armed and/or nuclear) retribution.
So, either Cali finds out the way to be a properly functional country for some time or prays that some other country is crazy enough to accept it giving a damn about what the rest of the USA would do to them.

alol biased much? I was simply posting on a quick google research about the topic not trying to make some political point. I cited a source and you didn't. I never said these online articles were incredibly vetted facts or examples of statistical perfection. Let's try to have a civil conversation instead of resorting to partisan mudslinging k? Also if you read my other post, I already said that California seceding would be bad for California and the USA, so stop assuming too much just because I'm bringing up ideas outside your current opinions. Sheesh.
As for your claims on meats and grains, where did you get that idea? A simple google search seems to indicate that California has no such deficit on those areas.

And of course I don't need to give a source, since I'm not stating facts. It's just my opinion.
