Gay Marriage Plebiscite Australia
-
Hey everyone,
There is current debate on whether Australia will have a Plebiscite on gay marriage - the people will vote to decide whether we should allow gay marriage or not.
There is a lot of talk about it being a waste of tax payers money and time.
I think it is demeaning and a total lack of respect that straight people can get married but we can not. And that we have to actually vote.
But the thing that I am worried about is the backlash. There is a lot of talk about how there will be a lot of hate speech. As selfish as it sounds, I'm very anxious about it. It gives my family the opportunity to really vote against it, because they are catholic and I am not really out to them. I just feel so uneasy about it all. I am a pretty passionate guy and wear my heart on my sleeve so if there is talk about this plebiscite, I don't think I can handle it very well. I will definitely be very vocal and perhaps emotional about it.
I just wished there was another way.

The last poll I saw said that Australians would prefer the money to be spent on chicken nuggets rather than a poll so the public aren't daft

Fellow Aussie here, what makes you think there'd be a backlash if a vote was passed? The majority of Australians support gay marriage so I don't see the opposition (old school religious families) being too much of a problem.

Hi! I probably wasn't too clear in the opening post and backlash isn't the right word. But have a plebiscite "allows" others to have hate speech and a chance to put down our community. I was referring to the plebiscite and its 'discussions' rather than the outcome itself.
The outcome will be positive, I'm sure but the process will be very dirty.

Democracy works both ways mate ,if you want your voice to be heard you have to be willing to hear the voice of those that may not like what you represent and the values you uphold, the alternative is this leftist new world fascism called Political Correctness an enforced language control, thought control and a doublespeak introduced to an entire population without people realizing they are being deceived and manipulated , you cant have "equality" Equality is a dream that is perpetuated to give people false hope, but it is never going to happen. Those of you that think “if we strive for it and push for equality, it will happen someday.” No, it won’t. Not being pessimistic – just realistic. Being equal requires giving up power and there is only so much power in the world. Those that have the power will never want to give it up, not for any reason. Equality does not exist and it never will. seeking protection of the law and equality are two different things , i will never be equal to a woman and nor will a woman be equal to me , that is the truth.
As an Australian i say let the plebiscite happen the Irish had a plebiscite and those that voted “yes” won with a very comfortable margin of 62.07% to 37.93% No.
you cant change the fact that John Howard amended the marriages act in 1984 to include "to the exclusion of ", what has been done , has been done , but to silence those in this community , our community gay straight , makes no difference to me , is a slippery slope into fascism.every voice needs to be heard , whether you or i like it or not.
even the term you used "hate speech" is a rhetorical flourish with no actual meaning. It is a garnish, constructed in the victim factories of the social-justice mullahs of the politically-correct to control ideas and censor words through intimidation.
the word Hate means to greatly dislike , so , they dont like that you or i are gay , so what ?? dont beg for anyones acceptance , you arent a slave and you dont have a master.
you cannot force people to agree with you -
?????? What ? So how can other countries including American legalise gay marriage WITHOUT a plebiscite but we can't? Did their nation have to vote on that issue? I'm not forcing anyone to agree with me at all.
Do you not see the disrespect that our community needs to go through in this day and age? Where other countries don't even have to vote to get 'married'. So should we have to vote to see if a man and a woman can get married? DID WE VOTE to get the marriage act changed to between a man and a woman ? Where was the democracy in that??? Hello ?????????? You cannot be serious mate.
And I didn't vote LIBERAL because I agree with their stance on gay marriage. I voted for them because I believe OVERALL in their management of the country. Noone will always support their party of choice 100%
Personally, I don't care about marriage but if my fellow mates want to get married and have it recognised - AND BE EQUAL - to everyone else then so be it.
