Video Quality Standards
-
Something I always consider when I download a new video is what quality it is in.I'm at the point where I really don't want to see standard definition unless it's the only version available for a video I want.I've also thought for a while that 720p, if not 1080p now that we're moving into the ultra HD era, should be the new standard definition for both internet video and cable TV and anything below that should just fade away.
That begs the question…..why does it seem like most videos circulating are still in SD?Why do most guys on here seem to prefer SD?Is it an issue of hard drive space? Is it an issue of internet speed? That's something i'm actually quite sympathetic to.Where I live my only 2 options for internet are AT&T and Comcast and AT&T doesn't offer speeds any higher than a poultry 3mbps in this area even though it's almost 2016!I was with them up until June when I switched to Comcast, which ain't cheap by the way, So having a decent internet connection is a relatively new thing for me, So i get it if internet speed's the issue for a lot of the members.I'm curious what kind of speed most members are working with.
Another thing is that it seems not all HD is created equal.I've downloaded some Lucas Entertainment videos somewhat recently that were supposed to be in HD.When I would highlight the file in windows explorer it would even say 720, but the actual video quality really left something to be desired.I don't know if they were download from the Lucas' website like that, or if the uploader did some kind of compression, maybe to shrink the size of the file, that diminished it's quality.
By contrast, when I download HD Tim Tales videos, they actually look like they're in HD.They're much more bright, clear, and crisp even though the file sizes are considerably smaller? Why is that? Why do some "HD" videos look like crap while others look great? Is there something like some kind incentive scheme we can put in place to encourage the upload of better quality videos?
I love Lucas entertainment videos, and am planning on putting in a request for some of their latest videos, but i'm wondering what the chances are of someone actually uploading a whole video, not just individual scenes, but a whole video in truly high quality 1080p.Does anyone know if you can even download whole movies from Lucas in 1080p?
Do you tend to go for HD videos?Do you even care what the quality is?If you're an uploader, do you tend to lean toward uploading higher quality videos?I want to hear your thoughts on video quality and how much, if at all, it matters to you.

I have to admit I don't check the 'quality' before I download. I check the cast and studio.
I mostly collect and post movies of the 1990s and early 2000s so, unless the movie is a remastered DVD, I get the quality that was going then.
Neither speed nor space is an issue for me. And I still watch some 8mm film transferred to VHS
It's only pr0n

If you're interested, I have the means of converting cellophane of any format to a digital video file. :cheesy2:
-
Thank you for the offer but I think I have collected all my 8mm films as digital movies over the years.
I still have the original reels though
-
Sadly, I get a lot of that these days… Most of the cellophane to digital media conversions that I do nowadays are for people who either have home videos that you simply cannot get anywhere else, or are from people that I used to dance with at the dance studio before my accident who want the videos of their competition performances converted over to a digital format. Speaking of conversions, I find it strange that I'm getting more requests these days for converting vinyl to MP3 and/or Audio CD.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.... The great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.

This is the biggest reason for me. I tend to hold on to videos and seed them as long as possible, and space becomes an issue.
Besides, I watch them on a laptop, and honestly, as long as the image is at least 512 or so, I don't usually notice the difference. -
For me i don't care SD or HD Video But I love to watch HD Video (720p or 1080p) because most of vides I watch on my 40" TV with HD Player.
Some vintage or a rare videos I always enjoy when i got it to my own   -
In my case, preferring a lower resolution has more to do with my video card than anything else. See… I'm on Linux running a particular ATI Radeon HD card that ATI has yet to release a proper update for, and thus, I'm having to run on the standard open source Xorg video drivers, which cannot always handle higher resolutions with a higher video bitrate. As for others, I cannot really say, but I would imagine that hard drive space has a lot to do with it.

I allways love HD video, at least 720p, because my TV is 65 inch, standard is so many mask.
-
There's nothing worse then downloading a hot looking vid to find out its resolution is around 320 x 240
-
usually 480p is alright for me
-
But, spunkie, the joy in finding a long-forgotten gem that has only ever been posted in 352 x240, the standard back when I was young and we had no choice with our 56kb/s dial-up connections.
I have thousands of 352 x 240 (or 288 for PAL) movies, wouldn't be without them

should be at least 720p…
