Travel advice for Latin America (Brazil espec.)
-
Hi guys,
I am planning a trip to South America next year ( Brazil and possibly Argentina) and I was wondering which cities/areas I should visit as a gay traveller.
I am planning to spend a week in Rio, visit Sao Salvador de Bahia and Florianopolis. Also I am in love with latinos, especially mulatos, so I wouldn't mind some hook up/flirting with sexy brazilian mulatto men. Any advice on how to maximize my chances to mess around with them? Are they more or less homophobic than whites?

Just don't kiss or hold hands in public… you may be beaten to death.
I'm from Rio, Brazil. It's awfull. I really hate being gay here. Avoid if you can.Another thing: don't treat mulatos differently... or as a fetish, or sex objects. It's a nice way to start messing around well.

Thanks man for the advice!
I thought Rio would be very gay friendly, I'm surprised to hear that you might get attacked…
It's not like I have a fetish or something, but I have a type. Everyone has. Plus, the bartenders in one of my fav bars here in London were mostly brazilian ( even the bouncer was, although he was, alas, straight) and super friendly, smiley and sexy!
Do you mean it's better not to kiss in public in general, or that many men do not want to kiss a man coz they are straight acting or something like that? I heard that for some latino men, it is okish to hook up with men, as long as you are the top, but I thought that Brazil was evolving past this attitude...

No, here in Brazil, I mean, at least in Rio, things are very different from the rest of Latin America. There are some guys that like to act straight, but it's not the same thing.
You'd better not show affection in public because it's dangerous. Because straight people might attack you and abuse you verbally or physically. If you are in Ipanema maybe you can risk some discrete displays of affection. At gay bars and clubs it's ok and safe.
