How many % over 100% to seed before I can upload a complete file?
-
Its been a while since I uploaded some files, just want to know how many % over 100% before my file is completely uploaded to the site? Because on my last 5 uploaded files, I need to seed more than the complete file size.
File #1, I needed to seed 154MB when the file was only 137MB.
#2 111MB / 102MB
#3 339MB / 319MB
#4 324MB / 312MB
#5 323MB / 325MB.Not that I mind, in fact I want to seed more to better my ratio, but I just want to know. And this is not seeding because there are leechers/downloaders, these numbers were only for initial seeding to have one complete file uploaded. Or maybe I am missing something from how I set-up my client - uTorrent?

For starters you are not uploading files to the site. You are sharing files with peers. You maybe sharing the file with five other people and that doesn't mean you are sharing the same piece of the file to each person at the same time. Lastly not everything that your torrent clients reports as uploaded is actually part of the file and the site only counts the parts of the file that are shared.
In order to share a file you must have leechers and those leechers must be connected to you. Let's say you have 100MB file with four leechers connected to you the first one gets 50MB from you the second one 30MB the third one 20MB and the four one 25MB. You have transferred 105MB yet not one leecher has a complete file so none of them can become a seeder. There could also be another leecher that is not connected to you but is connected to the other four leechers and he managed to receive 100MB from the four. He can become a seeder and the upload traffic that he caused by downloading the file from the other four all went to the other four and not to you.

Unless you activate the "Initial seeding" or "Superseeding" (naming depends on the client used) option in your torrent client for that torrent, your client will distribute some of the same part(s) of the data files to multiple of the downloading peers. that requires you to seed more than the file size so that the client has served out each part at least once and a complete copy is shared.
With above mentioned option, the client fill first serve each part only once and start to serve it multiple times once all have been served once. That "Initial" or "Superseeding" option does slow down the upload until many downloading peers are in the swarm (around 10 are needed to get good speed). It has only an advantage for uploading from members with a low upload rate, to minimize the time until a full copy is out, but it isn't good for share ratio …

thank you very much to the both of you. that makes perfect sense, now I understand. Always happy to learn new things about torrenting.
