Torrenting/Browsing Enquiry
-
I just read a thread about someone getting arrested for copyright infringement. Regardless of whether it's true, it has me on paranoia mode.
I apologize for sounding incompetent on these technical details. I am curious, how many people here chooses to use VPN or other private browsing services? Is the main purpose just solely to stay out of trouble? I myself am from Malaysia(Aka the Land of Piracy), and over here there isn't any need to consider using those; never heard/seen anyone getting into trouble over piracy as well. Although since I am moving out of the country soon I want to be uh, more "prepared" just in case.
From what I have gathered, the easiest and safest(Albeit, not cheapest) option would be to just purchase VPN service. I read that free VPNs are slow and tend not to care much about your privacy. For purposes of torrenting & browsing, should one just go opt for VPN?
Thank you all in advance for any information provided.

There are many potential benefits to using a VPN service. They range anywhere from having a more anonymous internet in that you can browse from your home, but appear to be in say Sweden, and you also get the added layer of protection of not being directly exposed. That being said, these kinds of things are not the only thing that a VPN comes in handy for. For example, I live in Canada, and in Canada, the Canadian Netflix sucks the poodle's wet balls. Through the magic of a VPN however, I can use the US Netflix, and watch streams from other sites like LogoTV that normally requires you to be in the United States. In short, there are many potential benefits to using a VPN, the biggest one of which is to hide your real identity.

Thank you MrMazda! Does using a paid VPN affect your downloading speed?

Not in most cases…. If you're using a really super fast like 150Mbit connection, then it's possible the VPN may not be able to keep up with your connection, but otherwise, you shouldn't really notice much difference at all.... Although some VPN torrenting can actually increase your speed because of traffic shaping imposed on P2P traffic by your ISP.
