As we can see marriage benefits people for tax purposes when they are poorer than when they are richer.
Pease limitation for an individual is $254,200 and for a married couple is $305,050.  Therefore, as a married couple it decreases from $254,200 to $152,525 per individual.
Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) for an individual is $52,800 and $82,100 for a married couple.  It should be $105,600 for a married to make it equal.  It probably doesn't affect if you don't live in California or New York.

          That is for the US.

The UK has removed the tax breaks for marriage.  No idea about other countries.

They are not tax breaks in my eyes.  Older couples are divorcing and staying together because they get more money indivudally from social security than together as a married couple.

You even admitted it benefits the poorer couples.

Also, the marriage tax break is an old fashioned thing from days when the wife stayed home.  It was then adjusted for the wife to have a part time job.  It hasn't kept up with the times as it doesn't take into account that both people tend to work full time now.
