Of course the best way to reduce weight is by modifying the balance of intake and output.
The output doesn't only means physical exercise(though it is an important one). When at rest, even when we sleep, our body burns calories for normal body functions. we call it body basal metabolism. the basal metabolic rate or metabolic age(when compared to normal chronological age) is often used by the nutritionist and physician as a reference to guide them in planning the changes required in the lifestyle.
one of the best way to increase this is by increasing the lean muscle mass. these muscles consumes a lot of energy just by being there. getting them to be there however, is easier said than done.
it is known that our metabolism increases after physical exercise for certain amount of time. though might not be as long, it increases after eating too.
That's why increasing the frequency of meals in optimal interval helps. by doing this, metabolism is always high through out the day. but be careful to increase the frequency only, not the calories. Divide the usual total caloric intake, not increase them by each meal added. the easiest way to do that is by eating half of the usual meal first and the other half after two hours or so.
compared to carbohydrates and fats, proteins increase the metabolism for a longer period. High protein diet have been used(with cautious under medical expert's supervision) for weight managements. avoid a-whole-chicken-for-a-meal if not medically supervised, as the adverse effects are not worth the new look desired. just replace some of the usual carbohydrate or fat on the plate with protein. Never totally avoid other groups of food. even fat is very essential(absorptions of vitamins A,D,E,K, tissue repairs, productions of some of the body physiological substances etc…) to a good health. yes, there are no absolute protein in normal food but don't increase protein with fried chicken covered with mayonnaise and stuffed with butter.
some foods are known to boost metabolism more than the other. they are the whole lists you can find anywhere in the internet. green tea helps in reducing weight plus certain other benefits like detox. spices and chilies add flavors to foods. it is however crucial to be reminded that everything no matter how good is best when taken in moderation.
Lastly, every individual is unique to himself. work to reach the goals but always be positive with the present. And again, do not over do things!
