I am using freemake video but it keeps crashing.

I can get hold of something good that I might forget to pay for, but I don't know what that would be in the first place.  Any suggestions?  Something free is also fine of course.  Easy to use would also be nice.  I was trying something the other day I cant for the life of me remember the name of but couldn't edit and cut no matter how hard I tried.  I am computer savvy enough to put the hardware together, but fall down a bit at the software.

Or is there any reason Freeemake is crashing?  CPU temp is 60C which seems okay, it doesnt seem to like H.264 or AAC, so maybe there is a codec I could add.  MPEG4 and AAC is no good, MPEG and MP3 seems okay.  I am assuming h.264 and aac makes little difference except knocks a wee bit off file size.  Probably plays worse on older machines, but still I'd prefer it didnt crash.

      Thanks

This is such a subjective item - you will get as many answers as people…

But my first choice for editing, encoding/converting and even ripping DVDs or individual tracks from DVDs is TMPGEnc Mastering 5 from pegasys http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tvmw5.html

It is not free  ;). I have probably dowzens of other progs that do editing and/or converting and/or encode but this is where I turn first.

I'll leave the screen capture to someone else 🙂

Perhaps just one other http://www.wondershare.com/ - it converts quite well, not always the end result you want but little fuss. But it is a great programme for downloading from youtube 🙂

Try Handbrake for encoding/converting. Sorry, I can't help with a good free video editor … simple cuts and assemble actions can be done with AVI Demux.

… and canonmc is right, everyone his own favorite programme. Look at Videohelp in the Tools section. Use the serach and it will list programmes which might do what you are looking for, then try and sort.

            Windows Media Encoder - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17792
Is pretty good for screen capture and encoding, but doesn't have much power for editing.  I am a pretty big fan of Sony Vegas 9.0 Platinum when it comes to editing and converting, but it is not free (technically).  I have found decent torrents for it, but you know… downloading torrents is bad and stuff.  So.... yeah.  (/sarcasm)
