Hi all,
I was curious to know how many of you have watched the TV series "Torchwood"? If not, I really recommend it to sci-fi fans.
My partner decided to buy Season 1 on DVD when finding it at a low price, and he ended up buying the rest of the series including the very dramatic last part "Children of the earth".
One of the things that makes Captain Jack Harkness interesting is, he's bi. Okay, that is not a reason good enough to watch the series, so please continue reading ;D
"Torchwood" is a spinoff series derived from the very popular "Dr. Who". If you enjoyed it, you probably noticed a Captain Jack Harkness appearing a few times throughout the series? Same guy.
"Torchwood" is a special ops team operating an underground base located in Cardiff as part of the "Torchwood" institute. They study extra terrestrial occurencies and fight off evil aliens. Even though it sounds like another cliché, I assure you that Captain Jack Harkness, being quite handsome if I may say so, has his share of dark secretes.
I usually do not shed tears over what's happening in a relatively low-budget sci-fi show, but there were times when my partner and I did. Unlike most Hollywood movies / series, "Torchwood" is much more.. human. Despite crazy things happening with our heroes, they are just humans and they experience extreme pain and horrible losses, which is reflected in their emotions and makes you feel their pain. At least with a little bit of imagination; honestly they are not great actors, but they deliver well in my opinion. Want to see bad actors? Try "Farscape" ;D
The acting is fairly good on average. There are some less talented actors involved, although most do a decent and even good job. "Torchwood" offers sharp and ironic English humor, and I love it! Things will happen that you have probably never seen on your TV before, and the storyline is better than "Dr. Who", in my humble opinion. Especially the last DVD-box, "Children of the earth" is amazing! It was such a thrill to watch, we finished the last three episodes in a row because we simply couldn't wait until the next day.
"Torchwood" is definitely worth watching if you like sci-fi with sometimes rather unpredictable plots, sharp and ironic English humor sprinkled with juicy sarcasm. Add to this a couple of actors who knows their job and the stage being a city with (mostly) normal people, something which adds a bit of creepy realism to an otherwise anything but realistic setting.
If you have already seen this series, I also suggest "Firefly". You can buy the complete series for only £9.99 at Play.com. Fox TV killed the show after the first season, and I have signed at least one online campaign to give others the rights to pick it up and continue with it. "Firefly" was directed by Joss Whedon, who created the "Buffy" (the vampire slayer) and "Angel" series. He did an excellent job with "Firefly". Summer Glau stars in the "Firefly" series, as well. Most of you probably know her from "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (Terminator series).
Anyway, I just wanted to share my opinion on "Torchwood". If I could rip and share it I would, but please consider buying. It is absolutely worth paying for in my opinion. Either way, I hope you will enjoy watching it as much as we did! :hug2:
