I re-encode most of what I save with HEVC because of the significantly smaller file size. Smaller files means I can collect more of what I like without needing to buy more storage AND it's less of a dent on everyone's ratio when I share it. HEVC's been around long enough it shouldn't pose a problem to anyone downloading. Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime all use HEVC for their streaming services. That's mainstream enough for me
AV1 will probably replace it in a few years once there's hardware to encode videos in a reasonable amount of time, but for now, HEVC is what I'll use.
