Former Pirates owner tells Times he's gay

NEW YORK – Kevin McClatchy, the former owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates and now the board chairman at the McClatchy Company newspaper chain, said in an interview with The New York Times that he is gay.
The interview, which appeared online Saturday and will be in Sunday print editions, is the 49-year-old McClatchy's first public acknowledgement of his sexual orientation.

Chick-fil-A gives another statement amid gay marriage controversy, position still unclear

ATLANTA ? Chick-fil-A is once again in the public relations fryer.
The controversy flared up this week when a Chicago politician said the company was no longer giving to groups that oppose same-sex marriage, angering Christian conservatives who supported Chick-fil-A this summer when its president reaffirmed his opposition to gay marriage. Civil rights groups hailed the turnabout, yet the company never confirmed it and instead released two public statements, neither of which made Chick-fil-A?s position any clearer.

Indie Lebanese band voices hopes of Arab youth

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) _ Hundreds of young Arabs joyfully screamed out obscenities, encouraged by the handsome, gay Lebanese lead singer at the concert in Jordan's capital. Police looked on worriedly. People outside asked what was going on.
It was a performance by the band Mashrou Leila, which uses a hybrid of velvety Lebanese slang and European instruments to address difficult, sometimes taboo issues of Middle Eastern societies. Lyrics of love and angst are intertwined with more difficult, sometimes taboo issues, with issues like poverty, premarital sex and homosexuality in this deeply homophobic region.

For now Bourbon Street preaching limits blocked

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ A federal judge has set an Oct. 1 hearing for a city ordinance restricting religious or political speech on Bourbon Street after dark.
The Times-Picayune reports (http://bit.ly/PTt4SE (http://bit.ly/PTt4SE) ) that U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon issued a temporary restraining order on Friday that blocks enforcement of the law for now.
