Have you already tried using Internet Download Manager? This is the most reliable free video ripper I've used. If you know anything about html, you can look at the page's code –> find the link directly to the file of the video --> download from there.

So - I don't have an amazing ratio, but I work to keep it above 1.0. I uploaded ~1gb/hr during most of the freeleech, while downloading multiple files. With this - I expected my ratio to increase, that's how it works, right?

I started out at about 1.6, but since the freeleech started (ends in about 40 minutes), have dropped down to 1.202…

Did I do something wrong?

I've used piratebay for everything, including the entire adobe creative cloud suite. For security, I run everything in a virtual machine first –> run malwarebytes, avast, and Panda --> observe until comfortable. Only download from people with skulls next to their names, reading comments is the best defense!

You can get any video off of rec-tube by using FlashGot or IDM. Or, by finding the source link in the code before the vid times out and putting that into VLC.
