What is a Padding File?
-
Hi,
I just joined a couple of days ago and I have download five or six large collections of files and I noticed two of them had a file in in at around 25.55 MB and the are labeled padding_file_X
where X is a number from 0 to 255.See below for the an actually file name
_padding_file_0_如果您看到此文件,请升级到BitComet(比特彗星)0.85或以上版本 25.55 MB
Should I be reporting this because I can't see anyway to play or convert this into something usable, and if this are just space fillers then someone owes my 2018 * 10MB is around 2 GB of data that was downloaded for no reason, which also means that I have been sending out since since I am seeding these files. So by inflating their files, it makes it difficult to maintain your ration.
I am just wonder what I should do here.
Thanks,

I asked the same question last year. Here is the topic.

@ PhuqMeTied
I f you are no longer seeding…
you can remove or delete those files once you fully completed the whole part of torrent...

[if it bothers you / if not ignore…]
the link posted by leeniedo is very useful… -
Not to be confused with either paeodophile or paddling Phil.
Thanks for this, learned something new today between this post and the other post.

BTW:
@ PhuqMeTied
I have bunch of those so called padding file long ago included from the folder from other torrent sources,
I just deleted them cause it is annoying type of file [unwanted]…
and also it takes space from the hard drive and it does not affect the truly file I wanted and it is [playable]…In other words you don't need to worry about that padding file exec. on how to used...
It is generated by most of some old torrent program... -
@ leeniedo Thank you for the link to the last year's post explaining the files.
@john32123666, @bc22 - I thought the files were garbage from the beginning, but my issue is that some of these files are between 10 and 55 MB, and there are over 2,000 of them in one onlyfans mega pack that I downloaded. This means that at 1MB per file this is just over 2GB of data that is downloaded, which means in order to keep your ratio up you need to upload approximately half. Well these files are over 10MB each and some I saw in torrents that I was going to to down load were 55MB each. So, with the 2018 files at 10MB = 20,180MB or 20.18 GB (if I do the math the way the harddrive companies do it) of the 108.9 GB file that I down loaded is garbage and knocked my ratio down since I have only upload 7 GB of this. So my complaint isn't with what is on my harddrive because that is easy enough to fix (TRASH). My issue is that there are a lot of us downloading gigabytes of garbage which helps out the original seeder but screws everyone else. If I am reading the rules correctly.
Thank you all for the education, and showing me that this is an on going problem that really needs to be addressed by the moderators and admins.
Cheers and Happy 2021

Have had this happen to me just once, quite a few years ago.
In some torrent clients, one can select to not download certain files - but then that leaves a download slot open.
How often do you run into this?
-
You are very welcome !!!
Last but not the least …
be aware of any torrent file you are up to:
Check File Size, See what file is...[before downloading]
Uncheck unwanted file… -
Padding files are created by BitComet. They are used as fillers to ensure that no two files will fall under the same piece of the torrent. They are added "padding" to separate the files in such a way that you don't have the end of one file and the beginning of another file taking up the same piece of the torrent. As a general rule, we frown upon these files as they only serve to add space to the torrent, which isn't necessary to the downloading of the torrent.

@ Mr Mazda
Yes I totally agree on this… [unwanted or junk files taking up space] -
