***Dissapointments in gay erotic literature***
-
Here you can get everything concerning books of your chest. Disappointments of any kind in a specific book/ author or just in general.
I'll start :).
For me some grammar mistakes, ugly cover is no biggy. I care more about the content of the book, not the presentation (I look for that in visual forms - video, pics, comics).
So for now my biggest disappointments would be about characters. In many books one of the character is so womanized that you might start to think you are reading a MF book. It comes to a degree than I see "her" in a book (can't remember which one, I mean it was written her something, don't remember). It looks like writer just changed her into him and a few body parts and here we have a gay book. I guess the issue is because many writers of MM books are women. Some without a good idea how a relationship/ sex works between men. And some just take MF scheme and put two men in it.
Don't get me wrong. I like reading about twink and some hunk, as much as I like two hunks or three or more (not really into two twinks). I like even to read some about cross dressers. Don't know how to express this idea (wish I had some writing talent, then probably would write books like crazy). Even if a guy dresses up as woman he still is a guy (unless there are gender issues and he really rather be a woman/ be treated like one all the time, but it is a different subject). And I am pretty sure you can be more manly in a stockings and high heels than some characters in MM books without any cross dressing.
So if a book actually is about a feminine guy, it isn't an issue, but then an author makes all the couples not simple twink and hunk, but more like a woman in a guys body and a hunk it starts to feel like I am reading heterosexual romance :D.
If that isn't enough they are womanized into a wimpy, weak, etc woman. I just read a review on one book and it expresses how they sometimes are made not just into woman but into girls:
Stormy Eyes (Brac Pack #5)
by Lynn Hagen! This has been my least favorite in this series.
! I have really enjoyed the series so far but this one? Something really bothered me. I am seeing a weird trend with the 5 mates. They are all really young (18-19 mostly) and they are all immature as hell with two of them being almost child-like. They are all also very tiny and they giggle and act like, God I don't want to say this, girls. I guess I just feel like I am reading a m/f book with a heroine that I don't really like. And in this book two of the mates were caught slapping each other after getting drunk and were put in time out and made to stand in the corner. If they are so immature that they need to be disciplined with time outs as a 5 year old would be then they are really to young to fuck. It just feels wrongSo to try to summarize, if a book is about feminine guy I am fine with that. I like all kinds of genders, kinks >:D. But if it happens because author just can't make it a real MM book, it sucks in a bad way (you can usually fell then it is because of the lack of writing skills, not enough knowledge. Then it isn't intended to make it girly guy and manly guy).
Don't get me wrong, I am very open minded in books. I read from love stories to biggest kink stories or just books what has some sex in a background but it is secondary. As long as character fits the story, background and feels real (or as real as it can be if it is some fantasy, paranormal - which by the way sometimes can have way more realistic characters than some realistic kind of story) I like all characters.
So, don't be shy. Get it all out. Be the "books police" :police:

Unless they are colloquialisms, poor grammar can be distracting when I am reading a book, but
maybe that's just me. I haven't found anything published where I couldn't tolerate minor errors, but
stories on some websites/blogs don't keep me engaged when the writing is bad even when the "plot"
had potential. I also think some of the old gay porn literature could be redistributed with updated
art covers, too. Maybe they have been; I just haven't bought any in a long time. -
Aside from the spelling mistakes, which I still laugh at, the thing that kills me is when they accidentally change a characters name in the middle of a story. John becomes Fred, for a paragraph, and I'm like who the heck is Fred. Only to go back to John. Does anyone actually read these for simple typos?
I don't mind how they make their characters, but if you're going to have a feminine character, then make it a feminine man. I agree with naughty on that one, but its not the character as much as the writing.
Another issue I have is how the story ends. I don't mean HEA, but don't spend the entire book setting things up, only to finish it all in the last page. I just feel like "what just happened". I looks like the author was tired of writing and stopped. There are a few author's that do that, and I won't even buy their books anymore. It wasn't just one book, I gave them a fair shot. One author I even read 5-6 books, and every story ended like slamming the door in my face. So no more of that one.
Another issue, that someone reminded me of is unreal sex scenes. I mean come on, Fisting on the hood of a car, on a public road, with little lube and no prep? really???
I could go on and on, but the only issue really that could be fixed is the grammar and typos. I mean really.
