A sports writer for over 30 years, and well known in the Boston area, Steve Buckley has came out in his regular Boston Herald column. He has also been with Boston Sports radio station WEEI and a regular on its The Big Show since it started on-air in 1995.
“I have read sobering stories about people who came undone, killing themselves after being outed. These tragic events helped guide me to the belief that if more people are able to be honest about who they are, ultimately fewer people will feel such devastating pressure…It’s my hope that from now on I’ll be more involved. I’m not really sure what I mean by being “involved,” but this is a start: I’m gay.”
He started receiving supportive text messages from such sports celebrities as Kevin Youkilis, Red Sox player and 2008 Hank Aaron Award winner; Bob Craft, Chairman and CEO of the New England Patriots; and Theo Epstein, General Manager of the Red Sox. The Big Show devoted its entire program to the topic and Steve received congratulatory phone calls from his sports idol Hockey Icon Bobby Orr and from Curt Schilling, retired Diamondbacks and Red Sox star. Listen to Curt tell what Steve might expect as an openly gay journalist in the locker room–-
