+R vs -R

I have yet to get an explanation about the difference in CDs and DVDs between +R and -R
my understanding so far is that they both store the same amount of data, and seem to cost the same, but they are two different formats.
The +R is supposed to be more tolerant of errors
I am told that some devices are compatible with just one of the formats.
Any opinions on this? and is the difference significant enough to worry about?
