It has annoyed me that my dishwasher leaves a chalky residue or spots on all the plates, glasses, and silverware.  No matter what detergents I used, or additives, nothing was very effective.

I finally found a solution.  Go to a hardware / DIY store such as Home Depot or Lowes and where they sell pool supplies, they should sell muriatic acid.  That is actually hydrochloric acid.  It should cost about $1 a gallon.  Be VERY CAREFUL with it, especially the fumes.
If you throw a tablespoon (or less) of it into every load, you should have crystal clear glasses, plates, and silverware.
